What’s Happening?
Today, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports had their Preliminary Injunction hearing against NASCAR. If granted, this injunction will allow the two to compete as chartered teams in 2025. While there was no ruling today, we did learn quite a bit from those inside the courtroom.
- In what is a monumental development, the biggest takeaway from this hearing is about NASCAR Regular Season Champion Tyler Reddick. According to Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, Reddick can leave 23XI Racing if the team has to race as an “open” or unchartered team. This does not mean that he would leave in that case. However, he does have the option to leave the team if the court rules in NASCAR’s favor.
- This Preliminary Injunction would allow the two teams to compete as chartered teams during their lawsuit against NASCAR. If granted, it would provide the two teams with the financial security of their charters while they go to court with NASCAR.
- Among other notables, on the front steps of the courthouse, flanked by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan, the two teams’ lawyer, Jefferey Kessler, said that the two teams will proceed with their purchase of new charters from Stewart-Haas Racing. The future of these charters and their rumored drivers have been major questions since the Oct. 2 lawsuit.
- According to the initial lawsuit, both 23XI and FRM purchased new charters from the shuttering SHR prior to September. After weeks of speculation about what will happen to these charters, as they are in escrow without NASCAR’s approval, this is the first we have heard about this since an Oct. 23 court document revealed the teams had not requested a transfer.
- According to those at the courthouse, 23XI and FRM will have their ruling by Friday. Furthermore, if they do not get their injunction, the teams and NASCAR do not plan to appeal. Following the hearing, NASCAR, its lawyers, and officials did not speak with the media.
