David Ragan On Testing the NASCAR EV: “The Fastest I’ve Accelerated in My Life”

David Ragan caught up with the media at Daytona 500 media day, and he had some eye-opening comments about driving NASCAR’s EV prototype.

He said, “I will tell you that the acceleration coming off the corner at Martinsville, when the torque and the power’s turned up, I’ve never felt acceleration like that in my life. That’s the fastest I’ve ever accelerated because of the all-wheel drive and the torque.” according to the Associated Press.

• David Ragan tested the NASCAR EV in secret at Martinsville Speedway during the offseason. He was supposed to run the EV at the Clash for a “Demonstration”, but, that was ultimately cancelled because of the schedule changes. Regardless, NASCAR has made no plans to actually race with the car, at least for now.
• NASCAR has been looking at different places for alternative fuel in the future. Most notably, NASCAR has looked at hydrogen power in Japan alongside electric power with the EV. In regards to NASCAR converting to one of these alternate fuels, Ragan said to the media, “It’s inevitable that the transition will come at some point.”
• Fans are quite split on EVs in NASCAR. Some are concerned that the sound of the EVs will take away from the at-track experience, but, others are excited to see NASCAR trying alternative fuels.
