What’s Happening?
A post-inspection report by NASCAR indicates that William Byron and the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team will suffer a major setback at Daytona International Speedway, receiving a big penalty for unapproved adjustments ahead of the regular season finale.
- As part of the penalty, two crew members, including crew chief Rudy Fugle, were ejected for the remainder of the weekend.
- Byron will also lose his pit-stall selection, be forced to start at the rear of the field, and serve a stop-and-go penalty on pit road after taking the green flag. He was initially slated to start eighth, with qualifying rained out and the lineup set per the rulebook.
- Fortunately for Byron, the setback does not impact the points standings. The 24 car already secured the NASCAR Cup Series regular season championship last week at Richmond Raceway, clinching 15 valuable playoff points.
- According to Bob Pockrass, no further penalties are expected.
The question now is how quickly Byron can recover. Daytona has long been known as one of the most unpredictable tracks on the schedule, and while climbing through the field is always a challenge, the defending 2-time Daytona 500 champion has shown speed and resilience on superspeedways.
