What’s Happening?

For many drivers, Talladega was seen as a make-or-break weekend. While two NASCAR drivers walked away from the track as winners, not everyone was lucky. Here is the spring edition of NASCAR’s biggest losers from Talladega.

RFK Racing

Talladega has not exactly been kind to RFK Racing these past two seasons. While Chris Buescher failed to crack the Top 15 at Talladega in 2024, team co-owner Brad Keselowski narrowly finished twice in both races. This weekend, the RFK Fords had high hopes, with two of the three qualifying well and Keselowski off to a career-worst start, hoping to find similar luck.

So, basically, none of that happened. Let’s start with Brad, who found himself involved in the first caution of the day, one he may or may not have been the cause of. Then Buescher was taken out in the second wreck of the day, getting turned on the back stretch with Christopher Bell, as his day ended prior to the end of Stage One.

It was all left to a defenseless Ryan Preece. Preece found himself at the front of the field all day, and as the laps wound down, he and Team Penske’s Austin Cindric played the locomotive for each lane. Coming to the stripe, Preece fell short of the win by mere feet, just like his boss the previous year. This second-place finish was a career-best for Preece, until NASCAR DQ’d the No. 60, bumping it to 38th, meaning the RFK cars failed to finish in the top 30 and averaged a 36th-place finish.

Katherine Legge

Katherine Legge has had a difficult start to her first season, focusing on NASCAR racing. At Rockingham, in her debut with Jordan Anderson Racing, Legge failed to qualify and, after purchasing a ride for the race, was wrecked by William Sawalich.

After last weekend, the only female driver in the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series this season opened up about disgusting attacks from fans online. This weekend, with a new wave of support and a fresh start, Legge attempted her first-ever superspeedway Xfinity Series race, proving the doubters wrong and qualifying a solid 27th.

After working her way into the top 15 late in the race, Aric Almirola cut in front of Legge on the backstretch with 13 to go. So, why is Legge on our list? Much like last week, it’s not her fault that her day ended; not only did fans not blame her, but Aric Almirola even took the blame for the incident.

Thanks to Almirola, Legge missed out on a potential great finish in her first Xfinity Series superspeedway race, thus adding her to our list.

The Owners

Well, while NASCAR is typically at the end of fan outrage, the teams, or rather their owners, found themselves getting torched this weekend. NASCAR is in a stretch of multiple races with less-than-stellar reviews. Fans want the cars fixed, yet it seems like NASCAR won’t do anything.

However, fans learned this week that NASCAR offered teams the opportunity to do a “Run What Ya Brung” style race at the NASCAR All-Star Race, opting for teams to race with whatever safe setup they like. This could have perhaps led to teams finding a great short-track package for the Next Gen Car; however, due to the potential cost associated with this, the teams opted not to do so.

Fans weren’t the only ones who attacked the teams for this. In the latest episode of The Teardown, The Athletic’s Jeff Gluck tore into team owners and their constant complaints about costs. While NASCAR is part of the problem, perhaps this now legendary rant and the team’s inactions will keep the owners at the center of attention as well.

NASCAR on FOX

Well, we have just a few races to go for the 2025 edition of NASCAR on FOX, and this weekend marked the end of an important part of the NASCAR on FOX trail. Talladega was the last race to air on “Big FOX” or Network TV in 2025. It was also the last race for long-time FOX Sports director Artie Kempner, who was honored before the race in the drivers meeting and during the race by FOX.

So, how did it go? Well, the racing was okay; in fact, Talladega seemed to be the exact opposite of Daytona, with fans having more issues with FOX’s picture-in-picture commercials rather than the production quality of the race. A small example of this was in Stage Two, when the side-by-side showed the 3D Models of the cars rather than the actual race.

However, the big problems came when someone at FOX decided their best move late in the race would be two commercial breaks, one with 15 to go and another with NINE LAPS TO GO. Rather than cut to a major break with maybe 25 or even 20 to go, FOX opted for side-by-side for a significant portion of the end of the race.

But don’t worry, folks; at least it was side-by-side, so technically, it doesn’t count. How about we ask ourselves this: Would NBC or the CW do this?

Joey Logano

Oh boy, Joey Logano had a week for the books. Not only does the reigning series champion have one top ten and is off to a slower start than even last season, but he has been nowhere close to a win this season. To make things easier, let’s start at the end of stage two when Logano lost it over the radio after he accused his teammate, Austin Cindric, of giving “a Toyota a stage win.”

In all, Logano said to his team, “Way to go Austin, way to go, you dumb fuck! Way to fucking go. What a stupid shit. You just gave it to him. Gave a Toyota a stage win. Nice job.” This not only caught the attention of fans, the media, and fellow drivers, but also Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones, who went on a tirade against Logano.

Ironically, Cindric, perhaps unaware of his teammate’s comments, won the race. But, to the displeasure of some, including Jones, Logano finished fifth, a season-best. But Preece was not the only driver DQ’d after the race, as the No. 22 was also disqualified, finishing 39th.

So, way to go, Joey, way to go, you just gave it to him. You gave Noah Gragson fourth place. Nice Job.
