What’s Happening?
A storyline that began after Daytona this February has finally concluded in August. Kyle Busch Motorsports has been awarded $105,000 in its lawsuit against REV Racing.
In late April, KBM dropped the lawsuit with REV Racing, initially settling out-of-court for $325,000 and interest.
However, things have turned for the once-settled dispute. Collin Huguley of the Charlotte Business Journal reports that the court has found in favor of KBM after REV Racing missed settlement payments.
The original lawsuit stems from missed payments to KBM from the 2023 season, a season in which REV aligned with KBM, fielding a truck for NASCAR Drive for Diversity prospect Nick Sanchez. Despite going winless, the 2023 season was successful for REV and Sanchez, as Sanchez finished sixth in points and led the series in poles.
REV, which refers to itself on its website as “the competition arm of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Program,” had a dependent relationship with KBM that season. The alignment of the two was no shock, as KBM had long been a home for young drivers looking to start careers in NASCAR’s National Series.
During its time, KBM had drivers such as William Byron, Bubba Wallace, Christopher Bell, and Erik Jones come through its ranks. Last season, KBM, a Toyota team in its prime, switched to Chevrolet and maintained its role as an outlet for veteran and developmental drivers.
However, late last season, Busch sold KBM’s assets and shop to Spire Motorsports, which has taken on a similar role for Chevrolet, including occasional starts from Busch. Since this sale, Spire has also maintained a more successful relationship with REV.
In the Craftsman Truck Series season opener at Daytona, REV and Nick Sanchez won their first race days before the initial lawsuit from KBM.
At that time, the tone of the suit seemed more laid-back than what it would soon become, with the two hoping to resolve the matter. However, that matter continued late into the racing season.
The issues between the two seem resolved for now. However, as with the former settlement in April, more may come from this.
