What’s Happening?

A future NASCAR Hall of Famer now owns a professional hockey team. On Monday, the Charlotte Checkers announced they had been purchased by Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, with “prominent partners” including former NASCAR drivers Kevin Harvick and Regan Smith and former football players Tim Tebow, Myles Jack, and J.J. Jansen.

  • Kevin Harvick has been quickly expanding his business portfolio in recent years. He was part of a group alongside Dale Earnhardt Jr., Justin Marks, and Jeff Burton to purchase the CARS Tour late model series. Harvick also owns KHI Management, a sports and marketing agency with clients including Riley Herbst, Josh Berry, Shane Van Gisbergen, and other NASCAR stars.
  • The Charlotte Checkers are a minor league hockey team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They play in the American Hockey League (AHL), one step down from the top level, the NHL, and one step above the ECHL. The Checkers are affiliated with the Florida Panthers, who won the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.
  • While many major sports figures have invested in NASCAR teams, it’s rarer for NASCAR drivers to join ownership groups of other sports entities outside of racing. It’s unclear how much input Harvick will have on the day-to-day operations of the Charlotte Checkers, but it will be interesting to watch.
