AO Racing, known for its dinosaur and dragon paint schemes, competes in many premier sports car races, including the IMSA SportsCar Championship, which is owned by NASCAR. However, according to a new report from Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal, the team is interested in competing in various racing disciplines.
AO Racing’s COO Brian McKinley told Stern, “is considering entering other forms of racing in the coming years, including NASCAR and IndyCar.” Of course, this is not the first team to express interest in such a switch, but, thanks to NASCAR’s ongoing lawsuit with 23XI Racing, fans have kept close watch on news and rumors of teams interested in Racing.
As of right now, Front Row Motorsports and 23XI Racing, the teams suing NASCAR, have lost the two charters they owned prior to this season. Per NASCAR, there is known interest from teams outside of NASCAR interested in acquiring a charter to start a team.
While there is an agreement about who NASCAR can sell new charters to, on July 16, a filing form NASCAR claimed that “motorsports companies racing in INDYCAR, Xfinity, and other series” are interested in acquiring a charter. Furthermore, fans became even more interested on August 25, when NASCAR informed the court of its intention to “convey” a charter to a new team.
It is unlikely that this mystery team is AO Racing, as this interest in other series sounds like a long-term interest rather than a plan actively in the works, and the team has, of course, not announced any plans to field a NASCAR entry in any series.
