In a Caution-Plagued Xfinity Race At Nashville, Creed, Smith, & Jones Get Together On Lap-69

What’s Happening?

The Xfinity Series came to the Music City this weekend to race hard. That has been proven as the race on Saturday was plagued with numerous cautions and multi-car incidents. One incident in particular that caught the attention of the Daily Downforce crew was the following lap-69 incident involving Matt Tifft in RCR’s No. 2, Sammy Smith in JGR’s No. 18, and it collected Brandon Jones in the JRM No. 9 Menard’s Chevy.

You Need To Know:

• As the replay of the incident below shows, it would appear that Sheldon Creed’s No. 2 Wheelen Chevy came up the track, making contact with Smith’s No. 18 Toyota who was in front of him. However, in the footage provided, it does not appear that the RCR Chevy of Creed got loose, it would appear that he turned right into the JGR machine.
• While it cannot be said definitively that the contact between Creed and Smith was done intentionally, it has raised some eyebrows amongst those within the NASCAR community, especially considering the governing body’s recent crackdown on overly aggressive driving.
• Largely, this flew under the fans radar as they have, by this point in the race, understandably grown jaded by the amount of cautions to occur in this race. Still, a few caught it and it has sparked some interesting if not somewhat humorous reactions online.

Dustin Albino reports that Sammy Smith’s crew told him that he “pretty much got wrecked on purpose” in his battle for 5th place with RCR driver, Sheldon Creed.

Around The Garage

RCR retweets and update page, stating that after the accident, Austin Hill was 14th while Sheldon Creed fell to 22nd.

It has been a bad day for Joe Gibbs Racing as, not only did their No. 18 get involved in an incident, but Ty Gibbs in the No. 19 also crashed out. Pity.

In The Stands

Yambag Yahtzee tells NASCAR to “figure their drunk race out” or they were going to bail. Funny. Perhaps they’ve had a few too many themselves? In all seriousness, yes, the amount of cautions was ridiculous!

Dom finds it funny that an RCR car took out (or attempted to take out) a Gibbs car. It certainly is ironic.

William Nowacki is a bit ticked off at young Sheldon’s driving.

John Luke responds to our Daily Downforce page that it would appear that Creed just lost grip.

Toby Christie reports about the incident…then writer, Michael Daly complains that this race is starting to become 1992-2009 Bristol.

What do you think, NASCAR fans? Was that wreck intentional? Personally, I think it deserves a look. It is possible that it wasn’t intentional but it’s just as possible that it was. That said, I don’t think there will be a huge penalty or anything. There’s a difference between coming up on someone in the corner and right-hooking them into the wall head-first in the dogleg of an intermediate.
