What’s Happening?

This weekend, the NASCAR Truck Series joins the Cup Series in a doubleheader at Kansas Speedway. This race could be the most hyped mile-and-a-half race this season; here’s what you need to know.

• Kansas Speedway opened in 2001. It is located in Kansas City, Kansas, and represents the Great Plains region on the NASCAR schedule. Once a flyover track for most fans, Kansas has changed into a fast, all-out intermediate since the introduction of the NASCAR Next Gen Car in 2022.
• The track has hosted the NASCAR Cup Series every year since its opening and is a staple of the NASCAR Playoffs. The Truck Series has also raced at the track since its opening, making it one of the longest-tenured on the series schedule.
• This week is the first Spring Race since the track’s viral 0.001 finish last spring. Furthermore, Kansas is yet another track the Cup Series returns to later this season for a playoff race. This weekend also marks the start of a two-week off period for the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

• The NASCAR Xfinity Series has the week off this weekend, and thanks to the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race, it will not return to action until May 24 in Charlotte. Right now, Justin Allgaier leads the way in points, with Austin Hill just 51 points behind. Carson Kvapil sits first in the Rookie of the Year standings with 324 points and is good for sixth overall.
• This weekend’s race has playoff implications. While the Truck Series will not return to the track for their playoffs, the Cup Series heads back to Kansas City for the second race of the Round of 12 on Sept. 28. Teams will obviously want to win this weekend; however, collecting data will also be valuable during this weekend’s race.
• This race weekend feels a lot like Atlanta in February, as it is the first spring race at Kansas since Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher’s dramatic 1-2 finish. Their 0.001-second difference was the closest in Cup Series history. However, last fall’s finish between Ross Chastain and William Byron was slightly less dramatic. We will leave that finish above because we guarantee you will see Buescher and Larson soon.
