What’s Happening?
Fans may finally know the team with which Martin Truex Jr. will make his 2025 Daytona 500 start. This team, while shocking, is not new to NASCAR by any means, but if the rumor is true, the team will make its NASCAR Cup Series debut with the future Hall of Famer.

What’s Happening? Martin Truex Jr’s NASCAR career won’t end after the 2024 season. The driver was very clear that he would…
TRICON Garage to the Cup Series?
On a weekend packed with rumors about the Daytona 500, one that lingered in the minds of fans was about Martin Truex Jr.’s potential partnership for the Daytona 500.
When the former Cup Series Champion retired, he was clear that this was not the end of his driving career. Rather, he had one more goal on track. This goal was his ever-elusive Daytona 500 win, something he has failed to do in his legendary career.
Most insiders assumed that 23XI Racing would field this car for MTJ as Joe Gibbs Racing is already at the four-entry limit. Even in the depths of the NASCAR antitrust lawsuit, those in the garage area believed that this was the plan. That was until Nov. 22 at the NASCAR Awards Media Availability, when MTJ confirmed this entry was not with 23XI but stated, “JGR is doing it somehow.”
This weekend, a Reddit user stated they had inside information that MTJ’s route to Daytona passes through TRICON Garage. The nascarrumornostalgia Instagram account also claims to have heard a similar rumor. This account has a solid track record, and rumors give this post some credibility.
Is This Duo Likely?
While this rumor seems out of left field, it would be a perfect match as the former David Gilliland Racing has a solid reputation and ties to Joe Gibbs Racing, who is taking on two of TRICON’s former drives in the Xfinity Series this season.
Truex has no history with the team, but with 23XI seemingly off the board and perhaps entering a car at some point for TRICON prospect Corey Heim, there is a possibility this could happen. While TRICON would likely not enter this car multiple times this season, the support from JGR and the skill of Truex would make this a worthwhile investment for the top Toyota Truck Series team.
As of press time, neither the team nor the driver has confirmed that this will happen. The only confirmed aspect of this rumor is that MTJ will start the Daytona 500 in Toyota with support from JGR. Adding to the credibility of these rumors, insider Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports also claims TRICON is the likely team for MTJ to race with.

Martin Truex Jr NOT With 23XI For 2025 Daytona 500, Will Race in Xfinity Series Next Season

As of right now, there is more news about MTJ’s 2025, including Xfinity Series news and a potential reunion at Daytona.
Right now, the rumor for Daytona is that the car will run as either the No. 56 or No. 78. The No. 56 is currently not fielded by any teams; however, BJ McLeod currently fields the more iconic No. 78 on a part-time basis. BJ already confirmed that his team will be at Daytona, but that does not mean the No. 78 is entirely off the table.
For fans of MTJ’s Furniture Row Racing glory days, while he may not be with the No. 78, rumor is that his long-time Crew Chief Cole Pearn will likely be on the box for MTJ at Daytona, USA. The pair has 24 wins, 74 top fives, 110 top tens, 12 poles, and one Championship in 179 races.
At NASCAR Awards Media Availability, MTJ also claimed he may race in the Xfinity Series on a part-time basis, stating, “I’m looking forward to running some Xfinity cars a bit here and there just to have fun and see how it goes.”
