What’s Happening?
The NASCAR Silly Season kicked off this past weekend with the announcements of William Byron’s new contract at Hendrick Motorsports and Kyle Busch’s return to Richard Childress Racing. With two major names off the Silly Season board, fans are asking what the next major Silly Season move will be. Here are a few to look out for.
A Shocking Retirement?
While it’s hard to predict what drivers could or would retire, a “going away tour” is not always necessary in NASCAR. Drivers by no means need to announce their retirement prior to the start of a season. Take Martin Truex Jr.’s decision to retire last summer, for example. Now, several veteran drivers in all three NASCAR National Series could be faced with the same decision in 2025. These decisions can be shocking but also career-altering for underdogs and young prospects.

Will HMS Actually Replace Alex Bowman?
While there is a real debate to be made as to who the weak link is at Hendrick Motorsports, most fans, including HMS loyalists, usually point to Alex Bowman. It seems like a yearly tradition that NASCAR fans all point to certain drivers to replace Bowman and HMS. However, to their dismay, Bowman continues to stay in the No. 48. Following hefty rumors last fall, Bowman even went on an underdog run in the playoffs. However, this trend has continued into early this season. So far, some fans have suggested Carson Hocevar or Carson Kvapil to take over the No. 48. Nonetheless, despite a slight dip in overall performance early on this season, Bowman is still under contract until 2028.

A Charter Sale?
Last year, the Charter fire sale at Stewart-Haas Racing distributed three charters to the open market and led to three Silly Season moves, including two promotions and one reunion. While it doesn’t seem like a charter sale will happen this season, Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing are currently battling in court over a charter deal gone wrong. LMC wants a Charter for 2026, while RWR claims the deal should have been for 2027. If LMC somehow walks away with a charter, this could find another driver promoted or a familiar face in a new place.

Will Corey Heim FINALLY Get a Promotion?
Corey Heim is hands down the most ‘Cup Series Ready’ driver in all of NASCAR. Despite his dominance over the Truck Series and developmental contract with 23XI Racing, Heim still has yet to have a clear route to the NASCAR Cup Series. Though 23XI has three full-time cars, a real opening among the three drivers has yet to be found. As Silly Season rolls on, fans will keep a close eye on Heim to see if the 22-year-old could score a full-time Xfinity or even Cup Series season in 2026.

A Swap of Daniel Suarez for Connor Zilisch?
Entering this season, Daniel Suarez was, once again, a major question mark for Trackhouse Racing. Despite a disappointing end to 2024, his win at Atlanta Motor Speedway earned a contract extension. But, with top prospect Connor Zillisch looming, including a great start to his first full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series season and two NASCAR Cup Series starts, the pressure continues to mount for Suarez. This move will come down to a bold decision, with the only question seemingly being whether Zilisch is ready for the next level.
