What’s Happening?

Monday, news emerged from the courtroom of 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports’ preliminary injunction hearing. Jeffrey Kessler, the team’s lawyer, claimed that 23XI’s star driver, Tyler Reddick, could leave the team if they lose their charters. So, let’s break this situation down and look at Reddick’s options if this happens.

  • Yesterday, NASCAR and the two teams took their ongoing lawsuit to the courtroom for the first time. While not directly tied to the lawsuit, this hearing was for a requested preliminary injunction for the two teams.
  • If granted, this injunction would allow the two teams to retain their combined four and perhaps six charters in 2025. These charters allow their owners to share valuable revenue with NASCAR and its tracks and automatically enter NASCAR Cup Series points races.
  • NASCAR is planning on fielding just 32 charters in 2025 instead of the current four. If the teams are granted the injunction, they will race under the 2025 Charter Agreement—which they did not sign—without worrying about a clause that releases NASCAR of any legal claims.

Filling in the Gaps

Monday afternoon, NASCAR insiders went quiet on X as they entered the courthouse for the hearing. Most expected the news cycle to pick up the moment the hearing ended, with an explosion of posts on X happening.

But, the first bombshell from this litigation came from Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, who posted that 23XI’s legal team is claiming that Tyler Reddick could leave the team if they don’t get this injunction.

Bringing this up in court gives these words a lot of weight. But, it should be noted that these comments do not confirm that Reddick will leave 23XI if they lose their charters. Rather, they confirm that it is a possible result of this loss for 23XI.

So, in the event 23XI does not retain their charters entering 2025, what are the two routes that Reddick faces?

Becoming a Free Agent

As crazy as it feels, Reddick leaving now seems like an actual possibility, as unlikely as it seems. If 23XI does not have those charters and the money associated with them, its performance could drop. If Reddick were to leave his home of just two seasons, it appears that the NASCAR driver market would be his oyster.

For Reddick, as a free agent in this scenario, any team would want him and the sponsorship he brings from Monster.

However, this would mean that he would displace other drivers from their rides, as the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series lineup is, for the most part, set.

Of the top NASCAR teams, Team Penske, Trackhouse Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Hendrick Motorsports seem confident in their drivers. This does include those drivers whose teammates outperform them, but for those drivers, if Reddick were on the market, would their job truly be safe?

RFK Racing has a rumored new ride, with Ryan Preece as the potential driver of that car. Is he looking at an uncertain future in this event?

If one of these teams wanted Reddick, they would have to remove a contracted driver from their ride. While this would be a major change and would burn some bridges, it might be well worth it to sign the reigning Regular Season and perhaps overall Cup Series Champion.

Staying Home

The other option for Reddick is to do nothing. Stay with a competitive, be it unchartered team, and stick around for the fight.

Since joining 23XI in 2023, the two have seemed like a match made in heaven, with Reddick winning multiple races and contending for the championship in back-to-back years. Furthermore, if the former Xfinity Series champion were to attempt to leave, the team would likely pull out all the stops to keep him around.

One major and perhaps overlooked factor in Reddick staying at 23XI in this scenario is his relationship with basketball legend and 23XI co-owner Michael Jordan.

Since joining the team, and this season in particular, the two’s relationship seems concrete. Jordan even shared a special moment with Reddick in victory lane at Talladega. Perhaps this friendship would keep Reddick around.

The court will decide on the injunction by Friday. If the teams are granted it, this opens another line of silly season dialogue. If they don’t, Reddick’s decision may become the story of the off-season.
