What’s Happening?
Rumor has it that NASCAR is looking at implementing a new playoff system this season, but with 26 days until the first Cup Series race of the year, fans are wondering when the sport will finally announce these changes.
The Story So Far
Throughout the 2025 NASCAR Season, the talk of the town was that NASCAR had constructed a committee of drivers, owners, media members, and alums to discuss NASCAR’s playoff system.
The current format, introduced in 2014, has seen pushback from fans over the past few seasons, with many growing tired of the unpredictable nature of the system.
While this committee would not be choosing the new championship format, the members worked as a sounding board for NASCAR to bounce ideas and gather educated opinions from.
Initially, a change happening in 2026 seemed unlikely, though, as the season rolled on, and fans grew more and more opinionated, this tone shifted, with some form of change seemingly ever more likely well into the 2025 playoffs.
But, as of early January, NASCAR has yet to announce its new playoff system.

What’s the Hold Up?
On November 11, NASCAR Managing Director of Racing Communications Mike Forde said on an episode of the Hauler Talk Podcast that even with the playoff committee’s work complete, NASCAR officials still needed time to work out a change that addressed issues brought up during committee meetings.
Of course, such a crucial decision that affects how your sport is displayed will take some time. Though NASCAR has had these conversations for nearly a year, the options set in front of NASCAR officials all have their own pros and cons.
NASCAR Exec Gives Update on Playoff Format Announcement
What’s Happening? With the NASCAR offseason underway, fans are wondering when or if NASCAR will announce a new playoff system. In…
For the most part, NASCAR fans have fallen into three main camps of support.
First, and one of the most popular opinions is a return to a full-season, or 36-race points system, something the NASCAR Cup Series has not used since 2003. This system, while the fairest way to crown a champion, can create some runaway championship scenarios, something addressed by the chase format introduced in 2004.
The second option facing NASCAR is a return to the chase format. As NASCAR’s original playoff format, the Chase was somewhat of a stripped-down and slimmed version of the current system, with 10, 12, and sometimes 13 drivers (if you know you know) being grouped up and reset in points with ten races left in the season to decide the title.
The third option is to maintain, or at least modify, the current system that has been in place since 2014. This system groups 16 drivers over the final ten races, making them compete in three rounds of three races, eliminating the bottom four at the conclusion of each round. Finally, with one race left, the final four drivers all battle it out for the championship.
This system is often cited as overly confusing, oversized, and too chaotic, something reflected in the many drivers who have won a championship in this format despite a lackluster season.
For some time now, the consensus is that NASCAR will likely use some form of a playoff from 2026 onward, though whether it is similar to the ten-race Chase or playoffs is yet to be seen.
While it is a difficult decision to make, NASCAR is coming to the end of a very long runway to make this decision, so when will it happen?

When Have Past Point Systems Been Announced?
No one seems to be able to nail down when NASCAR will make this announcement, though there are some estimations.
For one, NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports suggests it will be in the next few weeks.
Don't know when the playoff format will be announced. Would think likely in next few weeks although would be mildly surprised if it is this week. https://t.co/m0cz85Px1R

This makes sense, as a glance at the NASCAR calendar reminds you that the first race of the season is less than five weeks away on February 1.
Okay, so when could this be? Well, luckily, NASCAR has had a bad habit of changing and tweaking the points system since the end of the full-season points system in 2003.
For overall resets of the system, such as 2004 and 2016, those were announced in late January.
NASCAR introduced the Chase System on Tuesday, January 20, 2004, just 18 days before the February 7 Budweiser Shootout. In contrast, the Playoff, though still under the Chase name, was introduced to fans on January 30, 2014, 16 days before the February 15 Sprint Unlimited.

But what if the change isn’t as drastic? Could an announcement come earlier?
Well, once again, NASCAR has had a bad habit of doing that over the past 20 years, for reference:
- On January 8, 2007, NASCAR introduced an increase in points to race winners.
- On January 25, 2012, NASCAR introduced the system that awarded winners 43 points, second place 41 points, and third place 40 points, and so on.
- On February 11, 2016, in a very late change, NASCAR changed the points system to adjust for the new 40-car fields.
- On January 23, 2017, NASCAR introduced stage racing and thus implemented a stage win incentive to the playoff system.
Most of these, alongside the two system overhauls, all have one thing in common: finding themselves in the final two weeks of January.
So, with the clock ticking faster and faster, NASCAR will likely have to announce the changes this month, and, if history has anything to say about it, the final two weeks of January 2026 will likely mark another major milestone in NASCAR history.
