It would appear that a mistake made by Truck Series Playoff driver and defending champion, Zane Smith, would cause him to spin on pit road during a caution pit stop during Saturday’s Truck Series race at Talladega. In the footage provided by FOX Sports, the No. 38 Speedco Ford cut dead left after nearly missing his pit stall. Smith would slam on the breaks, locking them up, and sending him sliding.

While everyone involved is extremely lucky they were not going up to speed and he missed the inside wall, the No. 38 truck did slam into the chest of crew member, Charles “Iron Man” Plank. Thankfully, he was not injured. You can watch the wild ride in the video below:

Talladega is always wild. Zane Smith, in the No. 38 Loves Ford, would retire from the race, leaving him in must-win territory heading into Homestead.

In The Stands

This is the second incident on pit road in as many weeks where a vehicle spun and headed straight for the inside pit wall. While this incident is quite a bit different compared to the Poole crash last week, it still got the fans talking, begging for change when it comes to safety precautions on pit road.

YouTuber, Skewcar, dubbed the Charles “Iron Man” nickname in this comment. He truly deserves it.

I’m beside myself, too, Kiara! Why did Smith just cut left? Though it would have cost him some significant track position, it would have been much safer to continue on and come down for service the next time around.

I hear you, Debra! With the Poole crash, an inside barrier just beyond the grass would have stopped that from happening. This, though, happened when he was already on pit road and about to get service. It’s tricky. This is a dangerous sport and any step towards safety can and should be taken.

Not athletes but butt! You’re right, Bill! These crew guys are tough as nails.

James Guy is definitely enjoying the sights and sounds of this Truck Series Playoff race!

J “Y” Deford, nope, not a wreck…well, not really. Just driver error, it would appear.

Kiara is back, wondering who the “f” was driving. That would be Zane Smith, defending Truck Series Champion.

Rowdy Busch Fan chastises Smith for not being able to get onto pit road without incident. Then hints that he shouldn’t even be in a Cup car at all! Brutal!

What do you make of this, NASCAR fans? This was certainly a bad mistake made by Zane Smith. Does he deserve the criticism he’s getting? What are your suggestions to further improve the safety of all pit crew members? One thing that could be done is not allowing crew members across the wall until their car has come to a complete stop in their box.
