What’s Happening?

In a now-viral video, a NASCAR safety car collided with a NASCAR Mexico Series car during a race on Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred during Sunday’s NASCAR Mexico Series championship race at Autodromo Miguel E. Abed, in which Rubén Rovelo took home the race win.

On the final lap, Santiago Tovar, driver of the No. 22 Quaker State entry, crashed into a tire barrier. Upon responding to the accident, a safety car, approaching at a high rate of speed, drove into the tire barrier and right front fender of Tovar’s No. 22, which was buried in the tire barrier.

Both Tovar and the driver of the safety car appear to be safe after the accident, as the driver was still in his race car and other safety officials on the scene had yet to reach the No. 22.

Furthermore, shortly after the broadcast footage circulated the NASCAR community, an alternate angle of the accident, posted to TikTok by user otonielmontoya95, shows the car backing off the tire barrier and Tovar exiting his car.

Nonetheless, the video has gone viral in the NASCAR and broader online racing community, garnering over 100,000 views across several posts.

Though this was a major moment from Sunday’s race, the main headline went to Alex de Alba, who won the Mexico Series Championship.
