A new report states that Tom Cruise still has a growing interest in creating a sequel to the 1990 NASCAR-based film Days of Thunder. While this is not the first time a rumored sequel has hit the news cycle, this time, the rumors seem to have more traction than before.

• The most recent word on this matter is that Cruise is in talks with Paramount about making a Day of Thunder sequel. In their initial report, Kim Masters and James Hiberd of The Hollywood Reporter gave the details of this potential film. They also highlighted the complexities that might hold up the film’s future, including script approval and Cruise’s busy schedule.
• The last major news involving Days of Thunder was a 2023 rumor that the studio was working on a sequel. This rumor ultimately went nowhere. Since then, there has been little to nothing other than encouraging words about NASCAR’s interest in helping from NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell this February.
• NASCAR played a major role in the development of the first film, including access to tracks and in-race filming. Rick Hendrick also lent a helping hand by fielding cars in three NASCAR races. These cars resembled those tied to the film’s plot.
• The 1991 film revolves around Cruise’s Cole Trickle. Trickle is a hot-shot USAC champion trying to make it in NASCAR while balancing relationships with a neurosurgeon, his Crew Chief, and fellow drivers. Most fans view Days of Thunder as essential viewing due to its authenticity.
• While Paramount and Cruise are just in talks, this is a good sign for fans of the cult classic. Hopefully, the cards fall into the right place, and fans will get to see the legend Cole Trickle once again.
