What’s Happening?
Homestead-Miami Speedway seems to be everybody’s favorite track. Yet, some drivers had forgettable weekends in South Florida, and these are the biggest losers from NASCAR at Homestead.
Dishonorable Mention – Kyle Larson (In Xfinity)
Kyle Larson was, quite literally, one caution flag away from becoming the second every three-race weekend sweeper in NASCAR history. That should pain anybody who reads it, as Kyle Busch, 15 years ago, was the last to do so.
Overtime cost Larson the win, much like it cost Saturday’s winner, Justin Allgaier, a similarly dominant win at Phoenix. While an outside factor affected Larson’s shot at glory, the racing gods proved one thing this weekend: there is no driver as dominant as prime Rowdy Busch.
Sam Mayer
Sam Mayer is on the other side of Larson’s Xfinity Series loss. At the end of the 2024 season, Mayer departed JR Motorsports and Chevrolet, perhaps hoping to establish himself in a more open OEM developmental system. Through six races, Mayer has done so in 2025, sitting second in points but, sadly, not without controversy.
Mayer currently finds himself as the alleged cause of Kyle Larson’s failed attempt at the triple weekend. On that overtime restart, Mayer lifted Larson’s No. 17 off the ground, preventing a solid restart. To give you an idea of what happened, Larson stated, “Can’t go when my rear tires are off the ground… the 41 slammed the shit outta me.”
Shane Van Gisbergen

Entering his rookie season, most wondered how Supercars legend Shane van Gisbergen would fare on ovals. The veteran is a lock at familiar territories like the fast road courses of NASCAR; however, he has very little experience on Ovals.
Regardless, road course aces like A.J. Allmendinger and Sam Mayer are typically solid at Homestead, raising questions at the start of the season of whether SVG could find his stride at the track. A great outing was not the case Sunday, as the Kiwi qualified 35th and brought the car home 32nd.
Bubba Wallace
Bubba Wallace led 56 laps on Sunday. Sunday, the long run toward the end of the race was not going to allow the No. 23 to win. As the laps wound down, Wallace watched his lead dissipate, dropping to second, then third as the race went on.
He currently has an 86-race losing streak, and this was the third most laps he has led in a race since his last win at Kansas on September 11, 2022. Despite his best efforts, Bubba cannot score a race win. However, drivers in the past have had similar streaks; perhaps one win is all it will take for a breakout season.
Alex Bowman
Alex Bowman is not the winningest, most popular, or best driver at Hendrick Motorsports. Yet, the driver of the No. 48 has a solid legacy and history in NASCAR’s top division. Despite this, fans have often theorized Bowman as the weak link at HMS, something a few of them may have doubled down on this past weekend.
The No. 48 was fast entering this weekend, scoring the pole and sitting up front for most of the afternoon. With the laps winding down, Bowman took the lead from Bubba Wallace. However, with Kyle Larson catching up, he didn’t even give himself a chance to fight eventual race winner Larson, slamming the wall and coming to six laps to go.
Ryan Blaney
Blaney was our biggest loser last weekend, and unfortunately, he is once again. Though this is not his fault, as in a flip to last weekend, in which Blaney started 36th and worked his way to the front, Blaney started 6th and ran up front all afternoon.
Onboard with Ryan Blaney as his engine goes kablammo.

"I'm fucking blowing up!"
"You have – got – to be shitting me."
"Oh my God, sorry fellas. It'll go our way eventually, I hope. Appreciate the fast car." pic.twitter.com/DlqAVTcmnf
Yet, rather than crashing out late in the race, as he did at Las Vegas, Blaney’s engine blew in dramatic fashion, much like it did at Phoenix. This is a very bad stretch for Blaney. After COTA, he sat second in points, falling to fourth after Phoenix, seventh after Las Vegas, and now finds himself tenth.
