What’s Happening?

A major rumor that hit the NASCAR online community yesterday involved Rick Ware Racing potentially selling their team following the 2024 season. This rumor originated with a rumor mill account on Instagram and gained traction on Reddit, X, and Instagram throughout yesterday afternoon.

Another Shocking Twist to 2024?

Tuesday afternoon, nascarrumornostalgia posted on Instagram that they had heard that Rick Ware could sell his NASCAR Cup Series team for the right price. As wild a rumor as it is, fans online took it seriously, as this account has a reputable history of rumors and typically clarifies whether or not they think a rumor is true.

The account further stated, “If I told you who I’ve heard is looking into buying it, you’d need to take a seat first.” Those who interacted with this post took this quote as a riddle rather than a turn of phrase.

Some pointed to the rumor referencing RWR’s current driver, Corey Lajoie’s, Randy Lajoie, who owns The Joie of Seating, a racing seat manufacturer. There is the caveat in the post that this sale would happen for the “right buyer and right price.”

Rick Ware’s team is coming off a 2024 in which they improved statistically almost everywhere. While this is the first rumor surrounding an all-out closure of RWR, it is not the first about changes for the team in 2025.

Lease or Sell?

RWR’s dramatic improvement in 2024 was thanks in part to its partnership with RFK Racing. RFK, whose Fords are consistently performing at a high level for the first time in almost a decade, is the center of a rumored expansion for 2025.

That expansion, allegedly to be driven by Ryan Preece, is all but confirmed, with sponsorship from Kroger on the way. However, the NASCAR charter market is slim, and several insiders point to RWR as the current owner of that charter.

Most assumed this would be a lease, as RWR has plans for 2025, saying that they will have two cars in the 2025 Daytona 500. The theory is that they would field a part-time or even full-time “open” or unchartered entry in 2025.

However, as we learned with Stewart-Haas Racing earlier this season, that can always change. If RWR were to sell, RFK could get one of the team’s two charters.

Lajoie and RWR in 2025

There is no indication that RWR will close outside of this one rumor, with people using nascarrumornostalgia’s history of quality rumors as a given. Notably, they posted a cryptic photo of Justin Haley and Corey Lajoie three days before RWR and Spire Motorsports “traded” the two drivers. Perhaps they have an in at RWR.

Furthermore, while Corey Lajoie is not locked into the No. 51 just yet, the word around the rumor mill is that he will drive that car in 2025. However, if this wild idea of his family buying the team were true, it would better secure that seat for the veteran.

However, veteran fans always suggest taking these rumors with a grain of salt. At least once a year, there is a rumor, even from credible sources, that a team will sell or close. But, with how crazy the NASCAR rumor mill is in 2024, there’s no telling what will happen.
