What’s Happening?

Leaving Homestead-Miami Speedway, a major point of conversation is the 2025 NASCAR Championship Weekend host track. There has been a lot of talk, but finally, a rumor from a recent podcast episode is giving fans an idea of what the future could hold for NASCAR’s Championship.

What’s the Rumor?

On the Mar. 24 episode of Door Bumper Clear, NASCAR Spotter Freddie Kraft stated, “The rumors I heard this week were Homesteads getting done this week; they’re gonna announce it this week. The next rumor was Vegas in 2027.”

This of course means that NASCAR will move its Championship race from Phoenix Raceway to Homestead-Miami Speedway next season. The short track in Arizona has been the host since 2020, while Homestead hosted the event from 2002 to 2019.

However, in a turn of events, the Championship will allegedly shift to Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2025. This also implies the often-talked-about rotating championship location will be in play after this season. Currently, Phoenix and Homestead are the clear front-runners to host the Championship in 2026. While Las Vegas is another track often named as a potential host track for the event.

Of the three tracks, Las Vegas and Phoenix are the only two that currently host a playoff race. If Homestead were to host next season, a significant schedule reshuffle would have to occur again in 2026 and again in 2027 with another venue change.

Past Talk of Homestead and Rotating Host Tracks

While DBC is known for rumors, some true and some false, a potential change in Championship location is a major part of the narrative for the 2026 schedule.

Talk of change has been around for some time. However this picked up in November when NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell listed several tracks, including Homestead and Las Vegas, as potential sights for the 2025 championship race weekend. Recently, O’Donnell has voiced the concept of a rotating Championship host track on multiple occasions.

Most notably, on the Feb. 12 episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk Podcast, O’Donnell stated “I do think a rotation is going to be really important for us.” He compared the concept to other sports that rotate their host venue for Championships. Ultimately, O’Donnell said he believes “a rotation is what the fans would like.”

Issues Affecting This Decision

While this is a new rumor, this weekend also had rumors that Homestead is not a lock for 2025. As Kraft also claimed in this episode of DBC, “They were flying drivers out there [Homestead] Tuesday and Wednesday to announce this, the finale. Obviously, something happened, and it’s fallen apart funding-wise.”

Other insiders, such as Jordan Bianchi of the Athletic, have stressed the financial battle between the cities of Homestead and Phoenix. Bianchi stated on The Teardown this week, “NASCAR wants to be here [Homestead]; they would like to have their Championship here, but this, at the end of the day, is also a business decision.”

Other factors that will influence this decision are race quality, an area Homestead has a leg up in, and fan interest and attendance, something that Phoenix has succeeded in during its tenure as host track.

Right now, it feels like a toss-up between the two tracks for 2026, but the rumor of the switch to Las Vegas in 2027 only furthers talks of NASCAR rotating the host track well into the future.
