What’s Happening?
NASCAR may move the Championship Race from Phoenix, but not in the traditional sense. According to a recent report, the sport is considering rotating the host track.
While Phoenix is confirmed to be back for 2025, NASCAR may move away from the track in the future. According to a Monday report from Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal, NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell says NASCAR is “debating” whether to rotate the location of its final race.
It is unknown if this is a short-term or year-to-year rotation. It would be a major change to the sport. Since 2021, NASCAR has flexed the schedule by removing and adding tracks and tracks, swapping weekends. However, the sport has maintained its championship location and weekend since moving to Phoenix in 2020.
According to this report, the tracks considered are more than just Phoenix and Homestead, the two most recent hosts of the race.
Past Comments on Moving In the Future
Fans have begged for a new track to host the race since the introduction of the Next Gen Car in 2022. This car, known for its poor performance at short tracks like Phoenix, is also known for its abilities at tracks like the long-time championship-hosting track Homestead-Miami Speedway.
This report reflects comments made at NASCAR’s State of the Sport press conference in November. At this season-ending press conference, O’Donnell suggested tracks like Charlotte, Darlington, Homestead, and Las Vegas as potential future homes for the event.
Despite this, Phoenix generates solid attendance numbers and is a good showing for NASCAR, as O’Donnell said in November:
“It’s very difficult to replicate what we see this week in the atmosphere, what goes into it, the crowd that shows up consistently. So as we look and consider other venues, all of that has to come into play.” — Steve O’Donnell
There are no rumors that Phoenix may be out for 2026, but this only continues speculation from fans that it’s time as NASCAR’s finale is coming to an end.
