What’s Happening?
A fatal shooting in Mukogee County, Oklahoma killed Jimmie Johnson’s in-laws Jack Janway, Terry Janway, and Jack and Terry’s grandson, Dalton. Jack and Terry are the parents of Johnson’s wife, Chandra. The NASCAR community on social media showed an outpouring of support following this tragedy.
- According to FOX 23, a Tulsa, Oklahoma affiliate, the shooting happened due to a domestic dispute. Police suspect that the wife, Terry, was the one who was the shooter.
- Jimmie Johnson is currently set to race this weekend at the first Chicago Street Race. No official word has been given regarding whether or not Johnson still plans to race this weekend.
- NASCAR fans on social media have offered an outpouring of support to the Johnson family during this tragedy. Many offered thoughts and prayers, and others simply gave Johnson the freedom to do whatever he needs to do, regardless of commitments this weekend.
UPDATE: Legacy Motor Club has withdrawn Johnson’s No. 84 from the Chicago Street Race this weekend.
UPDATE 2: NASCAR has released a statement as follows:
We are saddened by the tragic deaths of members of Chandra Johnson’s family. The entire NASCAR family extends its deepest support and condolences during this difficult time to Chandra, Jimmie and the entire Johnson & Janway families.

This is a horrific tragedy for Jimmie Johnson, and especially for his wife, Chandra. We express our deepest condolences to them during this incredibly difficult time. Thankfully, the NASCAR community has rallied around him during this time as well.
