What’s Happening?

RFK Racing will appeal the hotly debated penalty handed down to NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece, the team announced.

  • NASCAR fined Preece on Tuesday afternoon for a run-in at Texas Motor Speedway during stage two of Sunday’s Würth 400. This wreck followed frustrated radio communications between Preece and his team and ended Gibbs’ day.
  • Preece has admitted that he could have given the No. 54 room to get down in front of his car, but denies wrecking Gibbs. The penalty, 25 points and $50,000, is a hot topic in the NASCAR community, with veterans like Dale Earnhardt Jr. disagreeing with officials while peers like Mark Martin agree with the ruling.
  • NASCAR officials pointed to Preece’s radio communications prior to the incident, including a lengthy rant, as part of their decision. In their post announcing their decision to appeal, RFK said they look forward to presenting “our findings” to the National Motorsports Appeals Panel.
  • The NMAP consists of independent parties from the world of motorsports. Last season, RFK went to the panel following a major unapproved modification penalty to Chris Buescher; while they did receive some relief, the panel did not lift all penalties.
