- While NASCAR will not return to Chicago for a fourth annual street race in 2026, the sport has publicly professed its intentions to return as soon as possible. A key factor in this return will be a change in date from the event’s 4th of July weekend scheduling.
- In a recent interview with WGN Chicago, Brian Hopkins, Alderman of Chicago’s 2nd Ward, claimed that for this return, NASCAR officials are, “only looking at coming back to Chicago in June, July, possibly August.” Hopkins also claimed that NASCAR claims that putting on the race in August would be “challenging,” which is perhaps due to the onset of the 2027 or 2028 playoffs.
- While this is good news for street circuit fans, it does place limitations on its timing, as the city has claimed a new date is necessary. Hosting the race in the summer is a good bet for weather, but as fans often voiced over the past few weeks, the summer months are already drowning in road course races.
- NASCAR first raced on the streets of Chicago in 2023. Entering this season, there were questions about the race’s future, as negotiations with Chicago and the city of San Diego would determine its continuation. NASCAR announced on Jul. 18 that they will not return in 2026, but “with a goal to return to the streets of Chicago in 2027.”
