What’s Happening?

In the wake of Daniel Dye’s suspension from NASCAR for derogatory comments made during an online live stream, more footage from this incident is making the rounds in online circles.

Tuesday, a clip of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Daniel Dye from a recent NASCAR trading card opening session on the popular platform Whatnot took the NASCAR world by storm.

During this clip, Dye, who claims he had never met IndyCar driver David Malukas, told the story of an awkward interaction with Malukas at a promotional event for the IndyCar and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series shared weekend at St. Petersburg in February.

In sharing Maluka’s response to whether or not he raced on ovals, Dye mocked the answer the rising IndyCar star gave him, eventually settling into what he called “a David Malukas gay voice.”

Though NASCAR, Ram, and Kaulig Racing all acted on Dye’s actions with haste, rumors of the existence of other clips of Dye from the stream mocking Malukas, unfounded at the time, lingered.

However, a new clip from that stream featuring Dye, another co-host, and driver Brent Crews, has emerged online.

In this new clip, Dye continues using the voice heard towards the end of the original clip that made the rounds, with the 22-year-old responding to his co-host by twisting Malukas’ name into “David Ma-love-ass.”

As Dye continued opening cards, he was asked if he would like to put a card in a plastic sleeve, responding with a continuation of the same voice, “I would love to sleeve it. Always gotta sleeve it.”

When asked by his co-host if he would “rather sleeve it or get sleeved,” Dye responded, “If I was David Malukas, I’d rather get sleeved.” Dye then went on mentioning Malukas’ team owner, Roger Penske, again in the same tone of voice.

The Fall Out From the Clips

While this clip is new, NASCAR, alongside Dye’s Manufacturer, Ram, and Team, Kaulig Racing, have all acted on Dye’s comments, with NASCAR and Kaulig indefinitely suspending the driver.

In a statement to social media, Dye apologized to David Malukas as well as the LGBTQ Community, saying, “I chose my words poorly, and I understand why it upset people. I’m sorry to anyone who was offended. That’s not how I want to represent myself.”

To gain reinstatement by NASCAR, Dye must complete sensitivity training.

During the latest episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk podcast, NASCAR’s Managing Director for Racing Communications, Mike Forde, said that the length of time it takes for a driver varies person to person.
