What’s Happening?

Following Tuesday’s decision to suspend driver Daniel Dye for comments made during a live stream, a NASCAR official has laid out what a timeline for Dye’s return from indefinite suspension looks like and why these suspensions can vary by driver.

Tuesday, a clip from a NASCAR trading card unboxing live stream went viral as the host, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Daniel Dye, made comments deemed “homophobic” by many members of the NASCAR community.

During this stream, the 22-year-old, who races for Kaulig Racing, was recounting a recent interaction with IndyCar star David Malukas in which he felt Malukas was “distraught” that Dye asked if the series he raced in raced on ovals.

Dye continued his tale by mocking Malukas’ response, repeatedly mentioning the driver’s boss, Roger Penske, and settling into what he eventually called “a David Malukas gay voice.”

Shortly after this video, NASCAR and Kaulig Racing acted on the backlash, with both the sport and team issuing an indefinite suspension to Dye alongside a shared apology from the driver.

While NASCAR said that Dye must complete sensitivity training to return, as NASCAR’s Managing Director for Racing Communications, Mike Forde, said, that timeline comes with a little uncertainty.

When Will Dye Be Back?

During the latest episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk podcast, Forde said that NASCAR came to their decision to suspend Dye on Tuesday afternoon, confirming that both Kaulig and Ram were in agreement with NASCAR on the decision.

This decision came with the caveat that Dye must complete sensitivity training, something NASCAR has done in the past with similar situations.

So, with the road laid out for Dye’s return to competition, how long does Forde think it will take for the driver to complete sensitivity training?

Per Forde, Dye’s training will see him meet with experts in the field, and, as time goes on, those experts will inform NASCAR that Dye has completed his training.

From there, Forde says NASCAR will then determine if Dye is ready to return to NASCAR.

“We have specific professionals that we work with that have this expertise in that particular area. So he’ll work with this expert and that person, he’ll go through the training with this person, and then that person will come back to us and say, he’s completing his training, and he’s good to go, in so many words.
And then we will then decide if the suspension’s lifted.” — Mike Forde

Of course, that time frame could range; Forde says that how long that will take “varies by the person,” as the experts know whether or not the person they are working with is sticking with the lessons or if they are “just going through the motions.”

On Hauler Talk, Forde did note that the reason for suspension is taken into account, and that in the past, drivers have missed just one race.

Similar incidents involving Kyle Larson in 2020 and Noah Gragson in 2023 saw two very different timelines, though they were very different situations.

Larson’s suspension lasted from April 13 to October 20, 2020, while Gragson’s lasted from August 5 to September 12, 2023. In both situations, each driver did not return to their previous ride after their reinstatements.

At the end of the day, that decision will lie with Ram and Kaulig, but at least for now, the two are left searching for either a short-term or long-term replacement.
