What’s Happening?

NASCAR has suspended NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Daniel Dye for an indefinite amount of time following controversial comments made during a live stream on the livestream shopping platform Whatnot.

NASCAR announced Dye’s suspension late Tuesday afternoon following the resurfacing of a clip from a Whatnot NASCAR trading card unboxing live stream.

Per NASCAR, Dye is suspended for an indefinite time period and must undergo sensitivity training. Kaulig Racing, which Dye drives the No. 10 Ram Truck for in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, has also suspended him indefinitely.

During this stream, the 22-year-old mocked IndyCar star David Malukas, sharing an exchange the two had during promotional work ahead of the Truck Series shared weekend with the NTT IndyCar Series in St. Petersburg, Florida.

During the exchange, Dye said he asked Malukas, whom he admitted was unfamiliar with, if the series he raced in competed on ovals or just road courses.

Dye, in a mocking tone, then recounted the Team Penske driver’s reply, before continuing to recount the interaction using what he called “a David Malukas gay voice” for the rest of the short clip.

The backlash from the fanbase saw many asking for NASCAR and Kaulig to step up and act on Dye’s actions. In a statement on social media, Kaulig Racing said:

“Kaulig Racing has indefinitely suspended driver Daniel Dye, effective immediately, after becoming aware today of comments he made on social media.”

With the suspension, it is unclear who will drive the No. 10 truck this weekend at Darlington Raceway, or when and if Dye will return to his seat at the Truck Series newest team.

In a lengthy statement on social media addressing the clip, Dye said, “I chose my words poorly, and I understand why it upset people. I’m sorry to anyone who was offended. That’s not how I want to represent myself.”
