What’s Happening?

NASCAR’s May 5 penalty against RFK Racing driver Ryan Preece for wrecking Ty Gibbs will stand as is following a review from the National Motorsports Appeals Panel.

  • The sport fined Preece $50,000 and penalized him 25 driver points following the May 2 race at Texas Motor Speedway. During that race, after lengthy radio rants about Ty Gibbs, Gibbs spun in turns three and four after coming down on the No. 60 on entry.
  • While NASCAR felt this was intentional, Preece maintained in a SiriusXM NASCAR Radio interview prior to the penalty that he did not hit Gibbs, though he could have given him more room. The ruling faced split opinions from fans, with some agreeing and others disagreeing with NASCAR’s call.
  • RFK announced its intention to appeal the penalty on May 7, with the hearing set for Wednesday morning. Following the review, the National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld NASCAR’s ruling, albeit in a divided decision.
  • Per NASCAR, the committee agreed that Preece violated rules, saying that despite data supplied by both parties, Preece’s radio chatter was a deciding factor. “Neither side clearly proved their point, but Mr. Preece’s comments showed that he chose to not cut his competitor any breaks.”
