Is NASCAR’s All-Star Race Heading Back to Charlotte?

What’s Happening?

A recent social media post has NASCAR fans asking if the sport’s Annual All-Star Race is returning to its long-time home in 2027.

The 2026 NASCAR All-Star Race left fans asking two serious questions.

First, should the race continue at all? Second, if it does, where should it go in 2027? The former has been asked for years now, while the latter stemmed from Dover Motor Speedway’s lackluster showing at the event.

Now, the race itself wasn’t bad, but fans agreed that the vibe was off.

A lack of lighting, combined with a need for long-form runs (which extended the race to nearly the length of Dover’s 2025 points race), left fans feeling as if this was just another race weekend rather than the usual specialty event.

Still, Dover hosting the All-Star Race seemed like a rash decision made to get North Wilkesboro Speedway, the host of the event from 2023 to 2025, a points race. And most agreed that, at the very least, Dover, which had had a points race since the 1960s, should always have a points event.

So, even before drivers took the green flag for the All-Star Race, fans and industry members chimed in with ideas of where it should go in 2027, with many landing on the event’s long-time home, Charlotte Motor Speedway, as the top candidate.

The Rumor

While the idea presents its own set of issues, fans of moving the race back to Concord, North Carolina, saw a glimmer of hope Thursday, when a social media post from the Simracing Expo, which is hosting its event in Charlotte next year, claimed the race would be at CMS that same weekend.

This phrasing stemmed from their Instagram post, which read: “We are very happy to announce that our Charlotte based event will make a return in 2027 from the 21. to 23. of May, and before you’re asking, there will be a NASCAR race on the weekend as well, the NASCAR All-Star Race.”

While their Instagram post read that way, their post on X did not mention NASCAR or the All-Star Race.

Still, the IG post made the rounds in NASCAR online groups, with many wondering whether the Expo had some form of inside track, perhaps from NASCAR or even from local murmurs in the Charlotte community.

That idea is not completely outlandish, as rumors of races like the season finale returning to Homestead in early 2025 stemmed from local sources who were lobbying to bring the race back.

Still, others have continued to point out that while the race returning to CMS in 2027 is not out of the question, it seems unlikely that NASCAR or the track’s owner, Speedway Motorsports (the usual host of the All-Star Race), has made a decision on this so early.

The Complexity of Moving the All-Star Race in 2027

As mentioned above, there is a complexity to moving the race from Dover Motor Speedway.

To put North Wilkesboro on the points schedule, SMI and NASCAR had to cut a track’s points race; they chose Dover.

If the race were to move to another venue, most would expect that track to lose one of, if not its only, points race dates, in order for Dover to maintain a spot on the schedule in 2027, something the track president Mike Tatoian has already said is a guarantee, points race or not.

If it went to Charlotte, fans would likely not want to see the track lose its traditional second date, especially since it has moved back to the oval in 2026.

This is a tough spot, as NASCAR and SMI need to find a way to appease fans regarding keeping Dover on the schedule and finding a home for the All-Star Race.

Another thing many online have pointed out since this post has circulated is the time it could take to make such a drastic decision, with 2025 serving as a solid example.

In 2025, rumors of the Wilkesboro-Dover swap did not emerge until mere weeks before the schedule release, leaving fans with the impression that the call was rushed to add Wilkesboro after a swell of excitement from a solid 2025 All-Star Race.

So, for now, this is just a rumor, but that doesn’t mean race fans aren’t excited about the idea that a return to CMS could be in the works, no matter how complex that is.
