What’s Happening?

After hosting its first-ever NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race, Dover Motor Speedway officials say that they aren’t sure what kind of race the track will host in 2027.

This past weekend, the stars of the NASCAR Cup Series headed to Dover Motor Speedway for the 58th consecutive season of NASCAR’s top division racing at the one-mile track.

However, unlike past years, this race would not count for points, as NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports reshuffled the schedule last season, moving the NASCAR All-Star Race to Dover and awarding Dover’s final points-paying race to North Wilkesboro Speedway.

When NASCAR first announced this move last fall, fans questioned the idea, pointing out that the race, even if it were good, would not feel like an All-Star Race, given that the track did not have lights or even the same feel as Wilkesboro or Charlotte Motor Speedway.

In fact, prior to this weekend, there were even murmurs in the garage area that the track was facing a questionable future. Those fears were mostly put to bed this past weekend, but questions about what type of race the track will host in 2027 still linger.

As fans continue to ask this question, neither NASCAR nor SMI has yet to settle on a plan for the track next year.

Prior to yesterday’s race, Dover Motor Speedway Track President Mike Tatoian told Adriana Myers of WDEL that the track would race, but that “We just don’t know if it’ll be an All-Star race.”

Will Dover Get a Points Race Back in 2027?

As the show went on this weekend, the All-Star Race itself received mostly positive reviews, though most agreedit felt like a typical summer race at the Monster Mile, and others called for a return to points racing at the track.

Even race winner Denny Hamlin, who, counting his non-points win Sunday, has won at the track three years in a row, said that the race should be a points race.

While another reshuffle would be a welcome sight for fans, it is easier said than done. First and foremost, SMI would have to find a suitable track to swap dates with, which means another track could lose a second points-paying race date or even end up in the same spot Dover was this season.

Still, some fans are now even asking whether the race is worth putting on in 2027, saying that the diminishing returns of the once-popular event could make a break worth it for everybody.
