Early Life/Introduction to Racing

According to his website, Thad Moffitt was born on September 12, 2000, in Trinity, North Carolina. The son of Brian Moffitt and Rebecca Petty-Moffitt, Richard Petty’s youngest daughter, Thad is Richard’s grandson. Being a member of NASCAR’s “Royal Family”, Moffitt was certain to jump into racing, even though he did play other sports.

Moffitt started racing in quarter-midgets before moving up to go-karts and late models. According to his website, he raced at tracks like Ace Speedway, Liberty Raceway Park, Stateline, and Colridge. In 2016, he won a Championship in the Southeast Limited Late Model Series. He even became the first member of the Petty family to win at Myrtle Beach Speedway in 2018.

He was having success in late models, but Moffitt and those close to him wanted to move up the ladder even further. In 2017, at the age of 16, he made the jump up to the ARCA Menards Series.

ARCA and NASCAR Starts

In 2017, Moffitt made his first career ARCA Menards Series start at the historic Nashville Fairgrounds, and he finished 16th. He made three starts that season with his best finish of 11th coming at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

In 2018, he made five more starts with his first career top-10 coming at Toledo and his first laps led coming at IRP. He got even better in 2019 as he was finally old enough to compete at Daytona. He qualified on the front row for the race, but he would crash out to finish 27th.

Despite this, he went on to have his best ARCA season with four top-10s in seven races. His first career top-5 came in the opening race of the 2020 season at Daytona. He would go on to record 8 top-10s and 3 top-5s that season.

His best ARCA season came in 2021 when he competed in 16 races. He finished a career-high fourth in the standings despite not competing in all 20 races. This included 5 top-5s and 12 top-10s.

His first Truck Series starts came in 2022 with three starts for Josh Reaume and one for Randy Young. Moffitt’s best finish of 18th came at Daytona in the iconic 43, but for 2023, Moffitt decided to do something different.

Move to Trans-Am

Moffitt had some solid performances on road courses during his time in ARCA. He tied his best career finish of third in 2021 at Mid-Ohio, so, for 2023, he joined Team SLR in the TA2 Class of the Trans-Am Series.

In 13 races this season, Moffitt recorded 6 top-10s, 3 top-5s, and a best finish of second at the Detroit Street Circuit. He ran at many of the country’s most iconic race tracks including Sebring, Virginia International Raceway, Watkins Glen, and more.

2024: Faction46

Thad Moffitt will join the new Faction46 Truck Series team in 2024. It will be his first full-time season in any NASCAR National Touring Series. His first race will be the Daytona race on February 16th

Faction46 is based out of Oklahoma, and it is co-owned by Lane Moore and his son Landon. The team has an alliance with Niece Motorsports, which is building the cars for Faction46. They also will be heavily involved with content creators.
