Despite Ratings Bump, One Major Problem Persists for NASCAR on the CW

What’s Happening?

The NASCAR Xfinity Series made a full-time switch to the CW this season. While most fans have no problem with the actual broadcast quality, one major issue reared its head this past weekend during coverage of the Xfinity Series race at Phoenix.

Positive Reviews and Minor Issues

So far this season, NASCAR fans have enjoyed the fresh feel that the CW has brought to the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Though it’s technically the debut season, the channel first covered the sport last season with help from NBC Sports.

For the last eight races of the 2024 Xfinity Series season, the CW utilized a modified NBC Sports graphics package and the network’s Xfinity Series booth.

However, this season, the CW unveiled a new modern graphics package and a new booth. The new graphics package is unlike any other in NASCAR. The network’s new booth consists of Adam Alexander, Jamie McMurray, and Parker Kligerman. For the most part, fans welcomed these changes and viewed them as a refreshed take on NASCAR production.

Small Problems

That being said, NASCAR on the CW has had its fair share of complaints.

Most of these have centered around confusion about the broadcast location. However, in rare cases, some issues have caused fans to miss out on races.

The location issue centers on two points of confusion involving the CW App. First, some fans are still uninformed of the location of the race broadcast. Yet, as the season has gone on, most have realized that races do not stream on the CW App.

However, one question that continues to be asked almost weekly is where to watch practice and qualifying coverage. This is partially due to the lack of notification at the start of the season that practice and qualifying are exclusive to the CW App.

Aside from these, there have been small flare-ups of fans claiming in their region that NASCAR is not available.

During the Feb. 22 race in Atlanta, a reader contacted The Daily Downforce, claiming that coverage of the final stage was interrupted for coverage of a hockey game. Though we were unsure of the location of this disruption, discourse from NASCAR fans on X seems to have confirmed this claim.

We also found similar issues in which CW affiliates interrupted race coverage for regional sporting broadcasts. For example, CW 14 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, pushed the Xfinity Series race to an affiliate channel, COMET CW 14.2, to air the WIAA State Hockey Championships this weekend.

The Finish Heard Around (Most) the US

These reports were few and far between entering this weekend. Yet, the interruptions took a turn when a major market CW affiliate interrupted the final lap of Saturday’s GOVX 200.

As the leaders came around for the white flag in NASCAR Overtime, fans nationwide were treated to a memorable finish between Aric Almirola and Alex Bowman. However, this was not broadcast nationwide.

Peachtree TV, the broadcast affiliate of the CW located in Atlanta, missed the end of the race. The network cut to an Atlanta Braves commercial as drivers entered the dog leg one last time. Not only did the channel make a tremendous error, but they transitioned coverage to NBA action between the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers.

As a result, one of the ten largest U.S. media markets missed out on this great finish. The stress and headlines from this mess led to the CW itself releasing a statement on the matter.

The CW claims on its LinkedIn profile that it is “one of America’s major broadcast networks and reaches 100% of US television households.” This has been reflected in the large viewership numbers for NASCAR on the CW this year, but if fans keep having their coverage interrupted, it makes that network feel small.

Lionel Racing Reveals First Wave of 2026 NASCAR Authentics Diecast

What’s Happening?

Lionel Racing finally confirmed the first wave of 2026 NASCAR Authentics 1:64 scale diecast for Monday morning, with the line of retail-exclusive diecast featuring a new look for the new year.

  • This line will include six throwback paint schemes from NASCAR’s 2025 throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway. Though they did not release one in 2025, this move restarts an annual tradition of Lionel releasing at least one wave of cars carrying the colors of that prior season’s throwback designs.
  • Included in this wave of cars are Austin Cindric, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, William Byron, and Sammy Smith. Alongside these paint schemes’ debuts in the Authentics line is a new design for the packaging of the 2026 line of NASCAR Authentics.
  • Last season was somewhat turbulent for Lionel as, alongside issues with tariffs, the brand only released three waves of NASCAR Autentics, one wave of NASCAR Autentics Winners Circle diecast, and two waves of Haulers.
  • Lionel announcing the first wave of 2026 early on in the new year is perhaps a sign that 2026 could return this line to its regular release schedule. The post from Lionel Racing also confirmed that the brand will announce another wave by the end of the week, further hinting at a recommitment to the Authentics line.

Chase Pistone, NASCAR Trucks and Nationwide Series Driver, Passes Away

What’s Happening?

Chase Pistone, a former competitor on the short track racing circuit in addition to NASCAR’s National Series, has passed away. Pistone, now a successful Legends Car owner, was 42.

  • Chase’s brothers Nick and Tom Pistone confirmed the North Carolina natives’ passing to LegendsNation.com. The cause of Pistone’s passing is unknown. The family asked that media share the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number, which is 988.
  • Pistone, the grandson of NASCAR legend “Tiger” Tom Pistone, made his way to NASCAR after competing on short tracks in Legends cars and Late Models. He would make his jump to NASCAR via the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2005, racing for Green Light Racing at Martinsville Speedway.
  • Pistone would continue his NASCAR pursuits in 2006, racing in ARCA and the NASCAR Busch Series. Unfortunately, these two starts, at Martinsville with the Busch Series and Iowa with ARCA, would be his last for nearly a decade.
  • Pistone returned to NASCAR in 2014, racing in a combined eight NASCAR Camping World Truck and Nationwide Series races. During this season, his final in NASCAR, the then 30-year-old scored his best National Series finish, ninth place in the Truck Series annual trip to Gateway.

8 Takeaways From NASCAR At COTA

Three races in, the 2026 season is finally starting to show its hand. COTA shifted narratives, exposed weaknesses, and raised new questions about contenders, pretenders, and everything in between.

  • Has Shane van Gisbergen officially been proven mortal after getting outraced late at Circuit of the Americas?
  • Is 19-year-old Connor Zilisch already ahead of schedule after slicing through the field multiple times?
  • With three straight wins, is Tyler Reddick basically a lock for the postseason this early?
  • And how concerned should the 48 team be after a rough weekend for Alex Bowman?

From substitute drivers being forced into action to points gaps growing faster than expected, COTA delivered more than just a road course chess match. There were momentum swings, reputation hits, and at least one young driver stacking up enemies before stacking up results.
