Denny Hamlin Says This “Likely” Could Be His Final Contract Extension, Doesn’t Rule Out Future

What’s Happening?

During a media availability at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Denny Hamlin said that his new extension with Joe Gibbs Racing is “most likely” his last. However, Hamlin’s response was followed by a question of who knows, leaving the door open for the future.

  • Prior to this announced extension, Hamlin was on a contract season, and despite the wealth of talent in the Toyota camp and sponsor troubles early this season, there was little doubt Hamlin would not re-up. The deal is “multi-year,” and as this is the final year of his current deal, it implies he will be in the No. 11 at least through 22027.
  • Fans have theorized that Hamlin’s career is ending despite the 44 continuing to win multiple times a season. But throughout the year, Hamlin has reiterated his pursuit of the all-time wins record among active drivers, securing a top-ten spot in the all-time wins list, and his ever-elusive championship.
  • Entering the season, Hamlin seemed like the weak link at JGR, which featured a newly signed Chase Briscoe, championship contender Christopher Bell, and Gibbs’ grandson Ty. If Hamlin does call it a career at the end of this deal, it could leave an open spot for a driver like 17-year-old Brent Crews, who many view as Toyota’s future top prospect.
  • But one thing is clear: Hamlin is focused on the here and now as a driver. He currently sits fourth in points with four wins and has set the stage to have a solid start to the 2025 playoffs.
