What’s Happening?

This weekend, all three NASCAR National Series are back on track as they head to the tricky triangle in the Poconos for the final race before NASCAR’s in-season tournament. Here’s everything you need to know about this weekend’s race in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

  • Pocono Raceway is probably the most unique oval on the NASCAR circuit. At 2.5 miles, the track has just three turns, something unique to the 56-year-old facility. Despite opening in 1968, the track did not host the Cup Series until 1974.
  • Pocono has remained on the Cup Series calendar since 1974. In 2010, the Truck Series became the second NASCAR National Series to race at Pocono, while the Xfinity Series joined in 2016. All three series have continued to host races since their debuts.
  • While Pocono is unique in shape, it is also one of just a handful of tracks on the NASCAR calendar that NASCAR or Speedway Motorsports do not own, something rare for a staple of the schedule.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

  • This race is the final NASCAR Cup Series race as part of Prime Video’s five weeks of NASCAR Cup Series coverage. This weekend is also the final race weekend, during which practice and qualifying coverage will be live on Prime Video. Next weekend, TNT Sports takes over with races broadcast live on TNT and HBO Max, while practice and qualifying move to TruTV and HBO Max for the rest of the season, including NBC Sports’ coverage, which kicks off on Aug. 3 at Iowa Speedway.
  • This race is also the final seeding race of NASCAR‘s new in-season tournament. This tournament, dubbed the In-Season Challenge, will pit each driver one-on-one during five races in TNT‘s portion of the schedule. The final race will be at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with two drivers facing off during the Brickyard 400 for $1 million. Over the next three races, all of which will air on Prime Video, finishing spots of the current top 32 drivers will be collected to decide seating for this tournament set to kick off on June 28 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
  • Each weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series inches closer to the playoffs, which kick off on Aug. 31 at Darlington Raceway. While we are not quite halfway through the season, this weekend marks ten races until the start of the playoffs. With ten drivers locked in, only six slots remain for a host of hopeful drivers. The next ten races could decide the champion or even spell disaster for some teams hopeful of making the playoffs.
