What’s Happening

Rockingham Speedway’s return to NASCAR may be imminent. The track, built in 1969, is rumored to have locked down Easter weekend next season for the ARCA Menard Series, Craftsman Truck Series, and Xfinity Series.

What has happened?

Its last NASCAR race occurred in 2013, and its last Cup Series race in 2004, but the future looks bright for Rockingham. One of the longtime stays of NASCAR, the West Coast expansion in the late 1990s and early 2000s took the Rock off the schedule and left it abandoned until 2012.

The Truck Series races in 2012 and 2013 saw short-lived fanfare before the track was left to rot again. After three ownership changes, the track was gifted COVID relief funding similar to North Wilkesboro Speedway.

The grants awarded to the track helped bring it up to date. Now, with a fresh coat of paint, it is looking to return to schedule.

What does next year look like?

On this week’s episode of Door Bumper Clear, listeners were told that NASCAR would return to the track Easter weekend. This unconfirmed rumor, however, would be just the developmental Series.

This rumor defies past rumors that NASCAR would not race on Easter Weekend in 2025. However, those rumors may have overlooked the lower series and the ARCA taking over the weekend.

This year’s Easter weekend featured a doubleheader at Richmond for the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup Series, while the Trucks and ARCA took the weekend off. If this rumor comes to fruition, this is the third time the weekend will change for all three series in three years.

NASCAR has not taken Easter Weekend off since 2021, and the Bristol Dirt race for the Truck and Cup Series was held that weekend in 2022 and 2023.

The addition of Rockingham would add another short track and a third racetrack in North Carolina. Fans worry for another short track may be eased by the lack of a Cup Series race that weekend, as the Series short track product has seen a fall-off in competition in the Next Gen era.

While there are no confirmed reports of this change, the frequent rumors surrounding the track have been a large point of interest for fans and drivers this season.
