What’s Happening?

A recent rumor that Spire Motorsports is looking to add a part-time ride to its lineup in 2025 is making its way through the rumor mill. Unfortunately, there is a solid case to make as to what their plan is for this car. So, what can Spire do with an open car, and who could be driving it in 2025?

  • Spire Motorsports has three full-time cars. However, it has overhauled its program for 2025 by signing new talent both on the track and in the pits.
  • These additions include Michael McDowell and his Front Row Motorsports Crew Chief Travis Peterson, swapping Corey Lajoie for Justin Haley, adding Stewart-Haas Racing Crew Chief Rodney Childers, and Spotter Eddie D’Hondt.
  • There are also rumors that Spire could have more technical support on the way. With these massive changes, Spire is supposedly considering adding an “open” car to its 2025 lineup.

Where Did This First Come Up?

@brakehard WILL SPIRE MOTORSPORTS FIELD A 4TH CAR IN 2025? #nascar #racing #motorsport ♬ original sound – brakehard

This past weekend, Brakehard, via his TikTok account, posted an in-depth discussion surrounding an internet rumor that Spire Motorsports was looking at adding a fourth car in 2025.

This car would be considered an “open” or un-chartered entry. These open cars are expensive to enter, so most teams field them part-time. For example, this season, the 23XI Racing No. 50 has had multiple “all-star” drivers like Kamui Kobayashi and Juan Pablo Montoya and a Toyota up-and-comer Corey Heim.

Both all-star and developmental drivers would be solid driver options for a fourth Spire car. However, a growing relationship with Hendrick Motorsports and an ever-increasing Truck Series program could make the car a ride for developmental talent.

Who are some of the prospects that Spire could tap to drive this new car next year?

Carson Kvapil

Carson Kvapil is JR Motorsports’ most recent Xfinity Series hire. Kvapil is a second-generation racer and a ZMAX CARS Tour champion for JRM’s Late Model program.

Many fans thought that Carson would struggle to find an Xfinity Series ride in 2025. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s longtime partner, Bass Pro Shops, stepped up for a majority of the races.

However, looking to the next level, JRM’s co-owner Rick Hendrick could help Carson take that next step. If Spire adds a part-time car next year, the JRM, HMS, and Spire connection could bridge Carson into a part-time Cup Series schedule.

Corey Day

Corey Day could be the most overlooked prospect in NASCAR right now. The sprint car racer is currently fifth in the Kubota High Limit Sprint Car Series and a winner of eight races.

Day made his stock car debut this year in the ARCA Menard Series at Salem and the Craftsman Truck Series at Bristol. While neither of these was with Spire, Day has important sponsorship from HendrickCars.com.

If HMS and Spire wanted to risk it all, they could have Day make his Cup Series debut in this car next season. However, he is still early in his NASCAR career and may want to take it slow next season.

Rajah Caruth

Rajah Caruth is an obvious option when assessing a part-time Spire Motorsports car. First, Rajah looks like a key figure In the growth of HMS and Spire’s relationship. This relationship could make a fourth Spire car more of a Hendrick developmental driver car than previously thought.

In that event, Rajah looks like a lock for part-time starts in the car. Caruth first gained the support of Hendrick last season, racing for HMS in a one-off at the Xfinity Series season finale at Phoneix.

That one start turned into a full-time schedule for Rajah with Spire’s Truck Series program. Notably, this came with part-time HendrickCars.com sponsorship that, after a great start to the season, turned into full-time support.

Hendrick believes in Rajah, and, with those ties and Rajah’s current ties to Spire, Caruth could be part-time in the Cup Series next season.

Correction: In a previous version of this article Corey Lajoie was listed as an addition to Spire for 2025, rather than the intended text of “swapping Corey Lajoie for Justin Haley.”
