- Sonoma Raceway opened in 1968, but NASCAR’s top series didn’t start racing here until 1988. The year prior, Riverside International Raceway, another California Road Course, closed, and Sonoma became its’ spiritual successor. Sonoma has been a staple of the Cup Series calendar ever since.
- Sonoma has been one of NASCAR’s most reliable weather climates. The track has never seen a race shortened or postponed by rain in its’ time hosting the Cup Series.
- Fans enjoy road course racing in NASCAR, even though the Next-Gen car has struggled on road courses. Sonoma’s consistently good weather keeps fans from worrying about the race being moved or postponed.

Sonoma Weather History
As previously mentioned, Sonoma Raceway seldom deals with rain during NASCAR weekends. One exception was in 2013 when a light rain brought out a caution early in the race. However, the race quickly resumed, and Martin Truex Jr. won his second career race to break a six-year losing streak.
