What’s Happening?
Donald Trump is back campaigning in NASCAR country. NASCAR Cup Series team owner Richard Childress introduced the Republican Presidential nominee at a Charlotte, North Carolina rally on Wednesday. The full Childress speech can be found in the video below (2:21:40-2:27:50).
- Richard Childress is a longtime NASCAR team owner and runs Richard Childress Racing. He joined the sport in 1969 as an owner-driver, recording 76 top-10 finishes in 285 starts and a best career points standings finish of fifth in 1975. After retiring from driving following the 1981 season, he transitioned solely to an owner, winning seven Championships with NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt. Today, Childress runs a two-car Cup Series operation for drivers Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch and a two-car Xfinity Series team for Austin Hill and Jesse Love.
- Childress and Trump were seen together when the 45th President visited the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day Weekend for the Coca-Cola 600. The two stood on the starting grid together before Trump watched part of the race from an RCR pit box. Trump also ventured into the suites to visit seven-time Cup Series Champion Richard Petty.
- Republican presidential candidates often campaign at NASCAR races. Ronald Reagan was the first notable candidate to do so, taking in the 1984 Firecracker 400 at Daytona (Petty’s 200th win) on the Fourth of July. Since then, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Trump have all appeared at NASCAR races while on the campaign trail. Trump also visited a NASCAR race in 2020, as the Presidential motorcade led the starting grid on the pace laps before the start of the 2020 Daytona 500.
