What’s Happening?

With the 2024 NASCAR season over, we can reflect on one of the wildest seasons of penalties in recent NASCAR history. Here are five of the wildest and most memorable penalties of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Season.

Joey Logano Suffers Pit Road Penalty After Race

Following an incident with Austin Dillon at the fall Richmond race, Joey Logano, in his anger and frustration, made one poor decision that led to a major penalty that following week.

As Logano drove his No. 22 down pit road following the conclusion of the race, he sped down and stopped in front of Dillon’s pit stall, where Logano spun his tires and sped off. While this seemed dramatic at the time, onboard footage later proved how close Logano was to those in the pit stall.

NASCAR acted accordingly by fining Logano $50,000 for this behavioral infraction. Most fans, however, felt Logano got off easy for something so dangerous and seemingly uncalled for.

Stenhouse and Busch Fight Leads to Multiple Suspensions

An early wreck in the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro left an angry Ricky Stenhouse Jr awaiting Kyle Busch in the garage area. Busch intentionally wrecked Stenhouse out of the exhibition race on lap two following alleged contact at the start of the race.

Both loyal and casual fans will remember the footage of this post-race interaction for years to come, as it made headlines nationally. The fight included a punch from Stenhouse, and team members of Busch’s team literally threw Stenhouse’s crew off their hauler.

In response, NASCAR suspended No. 47 crew member Keith Matthews for four races and Clint Myrick for eight races. NASCAR also suspended Ricky’s dad, Ricky Stenhouse Sr., indefinitely. Ricky, who initiated the fight, also received a massive $75,000 penalty for starting the smackdown.

Martinsville Race Manipulation Costs Teams Major Dollars and Suspensions

The finish of the Round of Eight cutoff race at Martinsville saw Chevrolet and Toyota drivers manipulate the finish to allow either William Byron or Christopher Bell a spot in the Championship Four.

Bell, who needed to pass a car, and Byron, who could not lose a spot, got help from three specific OEM teammates. To keep Byron in his place, Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon ran a blockade for Byron and his much older tires.

While this happened, Bell received help from 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace, who slowed to a crawl and came to a complete stop in turns three and four, allowing Bell to pass him before the line. In an attempt to hold this spot after a poor effort to pass the allegedly downed No. 23 car, Bell rode the wall momentarily to get his momentum back.

This wall ride removed Bell from the playoff and made this penalty even more harmful for 23XI, as their actions had no payoff. For this penalty that “pissed off” NASCAR officials, NASCAR suspended the Crew Chief, Spotter, and one executive from the three teams involved. Furthermore, NASCAR fined each team member and driver $100,000 and 50 points.

Hamlin Loses Playoff Eligibility Engine Mishap

While he was not the only driver to suffer a penalty of this nature in 2024, Denny Hamlin’s revocation of playoff eligibility stung just a little bit more. While Hamlin still qualified for the playoff due to other wins, NASCAR revoked his win at Bristol from eligibility months after the race finished.

This penalty was due to confusion, with TRD sending the engine back to their facility and tearing it down prior to NASCAR doing so. NASCAR does this with each winning engine following a race, and fans now know what the consequences are for taking your engine home.

NASCAR assessed Hamlin and the No. 11 an L2 Penalty, 75 driver and owner points, and 10 NASCAR Playoff points. They also revoked the playoff implications of the win and fined Crew Chief Chris Gabehart has been fined $100,000.

Austin Dillon Suffers Massive Penalty Following Richmond

Austin Dillon was the other driver this season to see his win’s playoff eligibility stripped by NASCAR. Following a late-race restart, Dillon lost the lead of a race he dominated to Joey Logano.

On the last turn of the last lap at Richmond, Dillon rammed into Logano, spinning him into the retaining wall. Then, Dillon wrecked Denny Hamlin, who took a massive hit to the wall as Dillon won.

NASCAR revoked this win’s playoff qualification for his actions and fined RCR and Dillon 25 driver and owner points. Furthermore, due to audio of him telling Dillon to wreck them, spotter Brandon Benesch was suspended for the next three races before the National Motorsports Appeals Panel bumped it down to one.

Most felt this was the right call by NASCAR. However, it began to raise questions about the quality of the sports Playoff system prior to other races this late in 2024.
