What’s Happening?

Throwback weekend at Darlington is nearly here, and it is always one of the most fun weekends of the season. This is the 10th consecutive year of throwback weekend at Darlington, and teams have gone to great lengths to create fun throwback paint schemes. These are the best Darlington Throwback schemes.

  • For this list, we will consider multiple factors for what makes a great throwback. This includes faithfulness to the scheme, the ability to bring classic sponsors back, and the story of the scheme itself.
  • This list will only include true Darlington throwback schemes. Throwback schemes from other races or modern schemes that have been used for years that have a “Throwback feel” will not be included.
  • Fans love Throwback Weekend. They enjoy seeing iconic paint schemes return to the Cup Series, and it makes for some fun nostalgia.

Ross Chastain – 2023 UPS

Ross Chastain brought back one of the most iconic 2000s NASCAR sponsors in 2023. UPS, thanks to its business partnership with Worldwide Express, was on the hood of Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet. It threw back to Dale Jarrett’s UPS schemes from the 2000s.

Chastain made the car look good up front as well before crashing out on a late restart. The Worldwide Express logo on the back and the number not being the same does knock this scheme down a couple of pegs, but, it’s still a great recreation.

Kyle Larson – 2015 Mello Yello

Kyle Larson and Chip Ganassi Racing went the perfect route with their paint scheme in 2015. Larson threw it back to another famous No. 42, Kyle Petty, and the Mello Yello scheme from the early 1990s.

This scheme recreates that old scheme almost perfectly. The only main difference is the small decals on the side of the car, but, overall, it’s the same paint scheme.

Brad Keselowski – 2018 Miller Genuine Draft

Brad Keselowski and Team Penske took advantage of their Miller Sponsorship with their throwback schemes in this era. This one takes the cake because it ended up in Victory Lane after winning the Southern 500 in 2018.

This one throws back to Rusty Wallace’s first Miller Genuine Draft paint scheme from 1990. Wallace won 2 races in 1990, including the Crown Jewel Coca-Cola 600.

Kevin Harvick – 2016 Busch

Kevin Harvick and Stewart-Haas Racing did an amazing job throwing back to Cale Yarborough’s Busch paint scheme from the late 1970s and early 1980s. The number is the only thing that’s inaccurate about this scheme, but, it’s still a faithful recreation.

Yarborough sported this scheme in arguably the most iconic race in NASCAR history, the 1979 Daytona 500. While Yarborough never won a Championship in these colors, everyone knows this scheme.

Corey LaJoie – 2021 Zerex

The full story behind this makes it even more fun. Yes, Corey LaJoie and Spire Motorsports brought in Zerex and used the same number as Alan Kulwicki’s paint scheme. What’s even cooler is Spire was working out of Kulwicki’s old shop at the time.

Kulwicki won his first two races with Zerex sponsorship at Phoenix in 1988 and Rockingham in 1990. While it isn’t the Championship scheme from 1992, it’s still pretty awesome.

NASCAR Throwback weekend is wildly popular, and fans enjoy seeing iconic paint schemes on the track again. Which ones will join this list after this weekend?
