By far, the most important news story from this past week is Championship-winning Crew Chief Rodney Childers’s departure from Spire Motorsports. In a new report, Spire Motorsports Co-Owner Jeff Dickerson opened up about the shocking decision.

- When Childers and Spire announced the split Wednesday afternoon, it was not the first time this had happened with a Crew Chief and their new team. However, what made this case special was that Childers, a former Cup Series Championship-winning Crew Chief, was far and away one of the biggest silly season signings by Spire in 2024.
- The split seemed to be mutual, as no rumors or sly remarks suggest otherwise. While no one knew the exact reasoning behind this split, both Childers and Spire Motorsports Co-Owner Jeff Dickerson made statements that led some fans to believe it was the team’s decision rather than the veteran Crew Chiefs.
- In a new interview with Jeff Gluck of the Athletic, Dickerson claims the decision wasn’t about results or anything personal; rather, it just wasn’t working out. Dickerson told Gluck, “This is just one of those examples where things look good on paper but maybe don’t translate.”
- The stats support Dickerson’s claims that this breakup was not about performance, as the No. 7 team was pacing ahead of the car’s performance with Justin Haley and Corey LaJoie last season. Dickerson also revealed that the team approached Childers about the separation, as most fans suspected, telling Gluck, “We approached him on it and were pointing out the things I thought where we were at, and we just arrived at the same place.”
