What’s Happening?

Multiple sources have confirmed to the Daily Downforce that Dean Thompson will be promoted to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2025 with Sam Hunt Racing. Thompson is coming off his junior season in the Truck Series with TRICON Garage.

  • We are hearing from several sources in the NASCAR industry that 23-year-old Dean Thompson will fill a vacant seat at Sam Hunt Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. SHR, who fielded just one car with rotating drivers in 2024, has not had a full-time driver since 2023.
  • This signing shows signs of a growing relationship between SHR and Toyota. For some time now, fans viewed SHR as a secondary team in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. However, in the past two seasons, Toyota has sent talent such as Corey Heim, Ryan Truex, and Thompson to SHR for Xfinity Series starts.
  • This signing closes the door for other rumored drivers, such as Ryan Truex, Jeffery Earnhardt, and Heim. Heim re-signed with TRICON for 2025 on Nov. 7. When SHR last had a full-time driver in 2023, they ran a part-time car complementary to that entry. There is no indication they will do this next season, but it could be a possibility.
  • Thompson brings sponsorship from Thompson Pipe Group and leaves the No. 5 open at TRICON Garage. A deep dive into Thompson’s stats shows improvement over 2022 and 2023 in the Truck Series. There is no current rumor as to who will take over the No. 5 in 2025. TRICON also has a seat open at the No. 17 following Taylor Gray’s departure for the Xfinity Series.
