What’s Happening?
Former Supercars Champion Shane van Gisbergen recently revealed that his friend and current Supercars points leader Broc Feeney is interested in making his NASCAR debut, noting that Feeney wanted to race this season.
While drivers from other forms of motorsport coming into NASCAR is nothing new, Shane van Gisbergen’s success in NASCAR’s top divisions has sparked a revolution for drivers from the Supercars Championship.
Much like IndyCar drivers in the 2000s, more and more stars from the world of Supercars are trying their hand at the Craftsman Truck, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Cup Series.
Since van Gisbergen’s unlikely debut win at the 2023 Chicago Street Circuit, names like Brodie Kostecki, Cam Waters, Will Brown, and Jack Perkins have all made their debuts in NASCAR’s National Series.
One name often rumored to have an interest in NASCAR that has yet to make his debut is Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Broc Feeney.
Last year, rumors swirled that Feeney was looking for a Cup Series ride after the 22-year-old visited van Gisbergen at Martinsville. Since then, Feeney has yet to get the gears in motion for a move to NASCAR competition.
Another Supercars Driver from Down Under is Looking for His NASCAR Debut
What’s Happening? According to a new report, Broc Feeney, a Supercars standout, could make his NASCAR debut this season in select…
But, during the latest episode of The Dale Jr Download, van Gisbergen revealed that Feeney inquired about making a Cup Series start this season, specifically at Watkins Glen or Sonoma.
“He [Feeney] was trying to get in with some teams there, and I think he tried for Watkins [Glen] and Sonoma, and he really wants to have a crack. I’m sure he’d be like me, maybe he’d want to have a go on the ovals after, but yeah, be really interesting to see how he’d go.” — Shane van Gisbergen
While the deal did not come together for Feeney, van Gisbergen gave the Ford driver a vote of confidence, adding that he thinks a driver of Feeney’s caliber could be a boost for Ford on road courses.
“I think Ford struggled a little bit on the road courses,” van Gisbergen said. “So, it’d be good to get someone good in that car, not that the others aren’t good, you know, but yeah, it’d be really good to see what Broc could do and how much he could do in the future, too.”
Of course, while the reason behind Feeney being unable to get a ride for this year is unclear, most of the drivers who have made the jump to NASCAR for a one-off start have come from the Chevrolet camp, with van Gisbergen, Kostecki, and Brown all tied to a Chevrolet team at the time of their NASCAR debut.
Since 2023, the only Ford driver to debut in NASCAR’s National Series has been Cam Waters, who races for Tickford Racing. His debut came at Sonoma Raceway in 2024 with RFK Racing in their then part-time No. 60 entry.
This past offseason, Feeney’s team, Triple Eight Race Engineering, which is also van Gisbergen’s former team, switched from Chevrolet to Ford, a move that also took Brown out of the Chevy camp.
Feeney wasn’t the only Ford driver prevented from making their Cup Series debut this season, as, per Will Buxton of FOX Sports, Grove Racing’s Matt Payne was set to debut for Richard Childress Racing at Sonoma.
Of course, the reason behind Feeney’s failed 2026 debut is potentially different from that of Payne, whom Buxton alleged was blocked by Grove Racing likely due to the team’s ties to Ford.
