What’s Happening?
A new rumor claims that the NASCAR Cup Series team Trackhouse Racing may bring back their four open entry for the upcoming NASCAR race weekend at the street circuit at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado.
Open entries are no rarity in the NASCAR Cup Series, with seven making a combined 19 starts over the first 11 races of the 2026 season. Still, not all Cup Series open teams are built the same, and wins are few and far between.
One team whose open car carries more weight than the rest is Trackhouse Racing, which, since 2022, has entered the No. 91/87 in eight races with a rotating door of drivers.
In these races, the team has gone above and beyond, giving several big names in motorsports their first NASCAR Cup Series starts. These have included:
- Kimi Raikkonen | Watkins Glen 2022
- Shane Van Gisbergen | Chicago 2023
- Helio Castroneves | Daytona 2025
- Connor Zilisch | COTA 2025
Trackhouse has yet to announce any new plans to field this entry in 2026, though this may be changing, as a new rumor making the rounds on NASCAR social media claims that the team’s fourth entry could make its return this summer.
The post from Instagram, from an account well-known for posting NASCAR rumors, reads, “I’ve heard from a few folks now that Trackhouse currently intends to run a surprise 4th entry in San Diego.”
The account did not dive into who could be driving the fourth entry; this is not the first mention of the Trackhouse Racing open entry returning in 2026.
First mentions actually came from team owner Justin Marks, who told Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal in November that the team was “pretty close” to finalizing plans to return for this season.
While this is just a rumor, and even if it is true, plans could change before the first NASCAR Cup Series race at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado on June 21, it’s still unclear who could drive this fourth entry.
Trackhouse Owner Says Team is “Pretty Close” to Project91 Return
What’s Happening? Trackhouse Racing Owner Justin Marks claims in a new report that the team is “pretty close” to finalizing plans…
Who Drives the Fourth Trackhouse Entry?
Even if there is no clear frontrunner to drive the fourth entry, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating.
For one, fans have turned back to the team’s past, suggesting IndyCar legend Helio Castroneves could return to the car, or even that Trackhouse could turn to another Supercar driver in hopes of stacking their odds for the street race.
Of course, given their ties to Red Bull, fans have thrown out a few wild names, such as Formula One Driver Max Verstappen, or former Red Bull Formula One driver and known NASCAR fan Daniel Ricciardo.
Still, many have pointed out the many holes in that dream lineup, including the fact that, despite the gap in the F1 schedule that weekend, Verstappen, through Red Bull Racing, has ties to Ford, and, as of late last year, the now-retired Ricciardo is a Global Ford Racing Ambassador.
Wont be Verstappen because if he made a start it would be for a ford team https://t.co/xnCAgET11L

Nonetheless, if the team is planning to enter a fourth car that weekend, expect these rumors to persist well into next month.
