What’s Happening?
- RCR lost the appeal for the penalties at Richmond.
- What are the next steps for RCR?
On Wednesday, 8/21 Richard Childress Racing went in front of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel to attempt to appeal the penalty handed down by NASCAR after the conclusion of the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway. The panel ruled in NASCAR’s favor Wednesday by upholding the points penalty and playoff ineligibility handed down to the no. 3 team.
What Did the Panel Change?
While the panel upheld the points penalty and playoff eligibility penalty, they amended the suspension of spotter Brandon Benesch from three races to one. This means that he will be back on the roof Friday for Jesse Love and the no. 2 team as well as Saturday night for the no. 3 of Austin Dillon for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona.
What’s Next For RCR?
RCR has one more opportunity to appeal the decision by the panel to the final appeals officer. In this final appeal, they will have an opportunity to present their case to the officer to have the penalty overturned.
Richard Childress Racing is disappointed in the results of today’s hearing in front of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. We respect the NASCAR appeals process, but we do not believe that today’s outcome reflects the facts presented. We plan to appeal the decision to the Final Appeal Officer.
What Did the Panel Have to Say About the Decision?
NASCAR represents elite motorsports and, as such, its drivers are expected to demonstrate exemplary conduct if its series’ championships are to be validated. In this case, the ‘line’ was crossed.
