After the end of Sunday’s Straight Talk Wireless 400, Richard Childress Racing owner Richard Childress allegedly had a run-in with Joe Gibbs Racing. No, not a JGR driver nor the team’s owner; rather, a Joe Gibbs Racing rental car taking part in a JGR Police escort to the airport.
After the race, in which Hamlin brought home his No. 11 fifth after a 23rd-place start, the JGR camp grouped up in a police escort of roughly five cars. However, as gaps formed in this escort line, other non-JGR cars attempted to join the escort.
These drivers allegedly included Childress, who was not part of the escort but, as Hamlin claimed, a car that needed to move over for the escort. Rather than moving over for the escort, Childress, seeing a closing chance to merge in, attempted to join the convoy in a rather aggressive manner.
“Well, somebody within Joe Gibbs Racing didn’t leave a gap, and Richard says, ‘well, I’m joining this escort whether you guys like it or not.’ And he forced his way in. Well, this employee says, no, you can’t just join in, and so he pulled up beside him. What did Richard Childress do? He hung a left. Destroyed the side of the car.” — Denny Hamlin
Hamlin went on to detail the damage Childress’ alleged move did to the rental car, stating, “The right side of the JGR car was destroyed, and Richard just stayed on the gas. I mean, hung a left on him and just doored the shit out of our car. I couldn’t believe it.”
Fortunately, the car took the blunt of the hit, with Hamlin and his co-hosts reflecting on the incident in a playful manner. Of course, photo evidence was posted in an Instagram reel of the podcast on Hamlin’s account.
Ironically, this week, Hamlin and JGR took on sponsorship from insurance provider Progressive, who heavily advertises their Home and Auto insurance plans. Not only did JGR’s rental car suffer damage this week, but Hamlin suffered a minor grass fire early last week.
