What’s Happening?

On Saturday, L.W. Wright, a con artist famous for posing as a driver during the 1982 Winston 500 at Talladega, passed away. He remained off the grid for 40 years after his NASCAR escapade, but, he finally opened up to the public thanks to Rick Houston and the Scene Vault Podcast. For those of you who do not know his wild story, you can hear it here.

  • Rick Houston caught up with the man who was L.W. Wright in 2022 on the Scene Vault Podcast. This was the first time Wright had talked publicly about his NASCAR con job.
  • Wright was arrested in February of 2023 in Knox County Tennessee on charges of theft over $2,500, burglary, worthless checks, and evading arrest in neighboring Jefferson County according to Rick Houston of the Scene Vault Podcast.
  • Fans have been curious about Wright for many years. He was one of the sports strangest mysteries for decades, and, there is still some mystery to his story.

Part 1: Episode 193 L.W. Wright

Rick Houston caught up with the very man that no one could catch, L.W. Wright. In this episode, Rick Houston and Steve Waid get Wright to open up about the 1982 Winston 500 and what really happened.

In this episode, Houston tries to separate fact from faction. The story of L.W. Wright has plenty of muddy details, and vaulting himself off of the NASCAR grid only added to the mystery. How did he con the entire NASCAR garage into starting a race at NASCAR’s biggest and baddest race track?

Part 2

Almost one year later Wright was arrested in Tennessee. This time, Eric Estepp joined to talk to Waid and Houston about what it was like to get to know the mysterious man.

With Scene Vault being responsible for breaking the news on L.W. Wright, no one is closer to what really happened than Waid and Houston. There is still some mystery surrounding the story of Wright, but, the world now knows more than they ever have about him.

In the wake of Wright’s passing, it seems only appropriate to remember him for the stories he did tell. This is the time he was able to discuss one of NASCAR’s greatest mysteries.
