What’s Happening?

Prime Video has announced a new documentary about NASCAR’s Garage 56 project, which brought a modified stock car to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023. “American Thunder” will tell the journey behind the project and offer a behind-the-scenes look at how NASCAR took on Le Mans.

  • The documentary will be named American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans.
  • It will premiere on June 12, 2025.
  • Available exclusively on Prime Video.

The Garage 56 effort marked a historic crossover between stock car racing and the world of endurance racing. A Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, fielded by Hendrick Motorsports, competed in the iconic event with a driver lineup featuring Jimmie Johnson, Jenson Button, and Mike Rockenfeller.

Though the car suffered a driveline issue after 20 hours, the team returned to the track and successfully finished the race, finishing 39th overall out of 62 entries. The car impressed by running as high as 27th overall and leading the entire GTE-Am field at one point. The project also drew worldwide attention for its engine sounds, standout design, and NASCAR-style pit crew, which won the Pit Stop Challenge with a stop completed in just over 10 seconds.
