What’s Happening?
One race track that many fans want to see a return to NASCAR in some capacity is Rockingham Speedway. Recent comments and developments have suggested that Rockingham Speedway could have something up its’ sleeve for 2025, but, does that mean the track is slated to return?
- Rockingham Speedway is located in Rockingham, North Carolina. It is about 1.5 hours East of Charlotte Motor Speedway and about 2 hours Southeast of North Wilkesboro Speedway. The track hosted the Cup Series every year from 1965 until 2004 and two races yearly from 1968 until 2003.
- Rockingham left the schedule for essentially the same reason North Wilkesboro Speedway did. The track wasn’t in a big enough market, and it was too close to other more prominent circuits for NASCAR to feel it was worth keeping on the schedule. However, NASCAR did return to the circuit in 2012 and 2013 with the Craftsman Truck Series.
- Fans are excited to see if or when Rockingham comes back. It’s one of the most highly requested tracks for NASCAR to return to.

Speculation started the week of the All-Star Race when Carson Hocevar was asked on a Twitch stream what he knew about the 2025 schedule. He flippantly remarked that Rockingham Speedway would return, but, he gave no context as to the when or why. Alan Bailey cut the clip and posted it on social media.
It’s hard to tell if Hocevar was actually serious in the clip or just joking, given that there were no developments on Rockingham entering the 2025 schedule at the time. Either way, this piqued the interest of the fanbase.
This was further piqued when Alex Zietlow of the Charlotte Observer sat down with Dan Lovenheim, the owner of Rockingham Speedway. Lovenheim boasted that that track would be “NASCAR-ready by the end of 2024”, opening the door for NASCAR to race there. He later added:
I think 2025 is going to surprise a lot of people. We’re resurrecting this track like a phoenix. We’re bringing it truly back to life.
Dan Lovenheim
That quote can mean anything. Just because they could host a NASCAR race at Rockingham doesn’t necessarily mean they will, or even that they should. North Wilkesboro didn’t even bring NASCAR back in their original “Racetrack Revival” in the later summer of 2022.
Speculation was further fueled by an event posted on Facebook by WKA Series Dirt Page. The event was titled “THE ROCK Pavement Oval Returns in 2025”, scheduled for March 29, 2025.
Obviously, the WKA Dirt Series is not a NASCAR-sanctioned series. WKA stands for World Karting Association, and they are scheduled to be at “Little Rock” next to the big Rockingham Speedway on March 27-29th, 2025.
An optimist may notice that the race held this weekend in 2024 was the Richmond Race. The most recent report by Jordan Bianchi suggests that Richmond could be dropped from the schedule in favor of a race in Mexico City. This opens up the possibility of a standalone Truck or Xfinity Series race that weekend at Rockingham. However, that happening is completely speculative.
Unfortunately, there’s no hard evidence to suggest that Rockingham will be on the 2025 NASCAR schedule in some capacity. However, it’s not impossible.
