What’s Happening?

While the NASCAR Cup Series got this past weekend off, the nerves have already set in. This weekend, they join the Xfinity Series at Talladega Superspeedway for the second superspeedway race of the 2025 season.

  • Talladega is as unique as it is treacherous. The 2.66-mile superspeedway’s wide surface and 33 degrees of banking make for some of the most awe-inspiring and terrifying racing on the national circuit. With the modern racing of the Next Gen car, a wreck is looming around every corner.
  • The NASCAR Cup Series first raced at Talladega in 1969 and has done so every season since then. However, the Xfinity Series did not join the festivities until 1992, ten years after the series debut at Talladega’s sister track, Daytona International Speedway.
  • For drafting experts, Talladega serves as a dangerous yet clear path to a playoff spot. However, in the modern era, winning at a track like Talladega is out of the driver’s hands.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

  • This weekend is a fan favorite and a favorite of drivers who favor the aggressive balance of racing and decision-making that drafting tracks produce. Look for names, both at the top of the standings and at the bottom, to be contenders this weekend. Also, look out for a late caution to shake up the pack; remember, just because a driver is leading out of turn four doesn’t mean they are going to win.
  • For those drafting track experts, this track serves as one of the last few chances to lock yourself into the playoffs. After Talladega, the summer Atlanta race and the Daytona cut-off remain. Some names to look out for this weekend include Ryan Sieg and Matt Dibenedetto on the Xfinity side, as well as Michael McDowell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the Cup Series.
  • One storyline to look out for this weekend is the style of racing in the Cup Series. Leaving Daytona, most fans were tired of two things: the slow off-the-throttle racing and the aggression of drivers. When and if this continues this weekend, look out for more debate and angst amongst the NASCAR community.
