What’s Happening?

This weekend, the NASCAR National Series returns to Rockingham for the first time since 2013. This race weekend will be full of excitement and unknowns.

  • Rockingham Speedway opened in 1965 in Rockingham, North Carolina. Known affectionately as the Rock, the 1.017-mile track is one of NASCAR’s original venues and a fan favorite in North Carolina.
  • The NASCAR Xfinity Series raced consistently at the Rock from 1982 to 2004. The Rock did not host a NASCAR National Series race from 2004 until 2012 and 2013 for its only races at the track prior to this weekend.
  • The Revival of the Rock is a story very similar to that of North Wilkesboro Speedway. While a return to the track is important for NASCAR fans, races in Rockingham mean much more to the local community.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

  • This will be the first race at Rockingham Speedway since 2013 and the first NASCAR Xfinity Series race since 2004. Though the track lay dormant from 2004 to 2013, the Truck Series returned for a short stent that lasted for just two seasons before NASCAR left again after the 2013 race won by Kyle Larson.
  • Despite a long winter testing session for the Xfinity and Truck Series at the track, there are many unknowns this weekend. Rockingham brings a new yet welcome challenge to both the Xfinity and Truck Series, one that could favor a salty veteran or a short-track ace.
  • This weekend also marks Kasey Kahne’s return to NASCAR National Series action. This will be Kasey’s first NASCAR start since 2018 and his first Xfinity Series race since 2017. Though he has been racing on dirt, Kasey, a former runner-up in the Cup Series and Truck Series winner at the Rock, will have to rely on experience to compete this weekend.
